powder capacity and cost of brass and rifle. one is belted the other is not. range of effectiveness for tactical and hunting purpose. the lapua is close to the same performance as the .340wby mag.

What are we talking here, thousands? Is the perforance really appreciable? Would I be better off just looking for a Weatherby .340 Mag? I guess it takes us to another level, uh? From a medium range/medium game to a long range/large game rifle. Is this a safe assumption?

what do you want to do with this new rifle?? to be honest with you unless you plan to use strictly 250gr bullets the lapua wont give you much of an edge. the .338win is a great all around caliber.

all of the .338 mags are pretty good at that, the .338rum and .338-378 rum are the big boys if you will, but your still only talking at most 200fps advantage with the 250 gr bullets.

Heavy magnums generate heavy recoil, for me the .338wm makes the most sense; tollerable recoil, lower cost to purchase ammo or reload and plenty flat shooting for anything i'm likely to use the .338 for.

Would you say that the .338 Win Mag then would be a better long range choice for medium game than let's say a 30-06, or a .308? I'd like to take price into consideration here too. If we're basically pretty close ballistically, I'd opt for the least expensive.

the .338 would be fine, it would be better than the .308 and the 30-06. only bad thing is that the .30 cal stuff has a very good choice of bullets and weights, while the .338's arent to bad they do have their limits. have you considered a .300magnum of some kind or do you really want a .338 diameter rifle??

No, I haven't. I was just considering the best long range/medium sized game rifle for the buck. I have no particular preference. No pre-conceived ideas.

do you handle recoil well?? magnums in general recoil more than standard stuff like the 30-06.
tell us what your looking for here exactly, uses, finshes choice of company etc.. do you want a wooden stock or something else, stainless or matte. just for deer or do you wanna chase elk and moose and bear, or go to africa. Edited by pyro6999 - March/20/2009 at 17:44 |

I'd prefer minimum recoil. I'm basically looking for a long range multi-purpose/ deer rifle. I have no preference of finishes or company...just dependability under possible extreme conditions.

Handloading can make these big magnums more friendly too. If you hand load, some calibers are MUCH cheaper to shoot than buying factory ammo. I'm seeing this now.... That may factor in to a decision too.

Wasn't the .338 Lapua mag origionally (sp) based on a necked up .300 rum, before Lapua took over the development? That thing has to hold a ton of powder...................................... a ton of powder is 14,000,000 grains |

I don't handload. Have friends that do. Using the above criteria, I'm just looking for the best bang for the buck. Having available ammo and choices is a plus. Maybe a 30-.06 in a 700 Remmy might be the answer, uh? Or Savage, or whoever....

no, they arent from the same family, the lapua has a .588 head , where as the rum has a .534. the lapua was introduced in 1987. its based off of the .416 rigby. takes similar amounts of powder as its competitors do. |

Deer primarily. But, who knows what else I may need it for if this world goes to hell. I don't feel that I need a tactical model however. Just the standard, hunting grade, long range deer rifle...maybe stainless would be a plus, is what I'm thinkin.

If you are mostly hunting deer, a .300 magnum will be plenty, and also outperform the equivalent .338 at longer ranges with similar bullet weights. There is no need for a 250-grain bullet when hunting deer, at any range. I have never had any difficulty killing elk with a .30 caliber either. |
