I'm looking for a scope in the 500.00 range to go on a 223 bolt.It will be used for shooting paper and varmints out to 300 yards. It may also be used in a once a year shoot out to 400 yards. Thanks for any ideas.

Zeiss Conquest with the Z600 reticle.

Just a touch over $500 though.

Burris FF II 4.5-14 with ballistic plex. The marks are almost dead on with a 55 gr bullet. I have one on a rem 700 .223 and love it. The optics are very clear. The costumer support is very good by giving stickers for many loads and not being stingy with the information about where the ballistics marks are set.

 Both good choices.

I would lean toward 14x or 16x at the high end for small varmints at long range.

I've shot P-dogs with a 3-9x Leupold, and wished for 12x or more magnification.

 I'd go with a 4-16x40 Bushnell Elite 4200.

If you want better glass (than the FFII) the Burris Sig Sel is a nice scope.  Look at the 4-16 with the Ball-Plex.  I have a FFII on one of my rifles, and really like that scope too.  Little cheaper as well.

424164SF Bushnell 4-16x40 Elite 4200 Rifle Scope Bushnell 4-16x40 Elite 4200 Rifle Scope

+1Thunbs Up   the knobs are 1/8moa but they are finger adjustable so you can dial in correction.
I have one of these and it has been on several rifles and is now on a .223 and this is an awesome scope. The only down side is it does not have a lot of internal adjustment so I would select  rings with some adjustment built into the system like these:
420561 Burris Signature Double Dovetail 1 Rings Burris Signature Double Dovetail 1 Rings
  • Matte
  • Medium
SWFA: $29.95
More Info... Buy Now
I find the double dovetail to be tough as nails - no screw to work loose and the plastic inserts inside these dont mark up the scope and can be replaced with these to add MOA rather than use something to shim the scope. The system is very sturdy I have them on a 45-70 encore pistol.
626018 Burris Signature Pos-Align Offset Insert Burris Signature Pos-Align Offset Insert

Tough to beat a 4-16 SII Sightron for about $340.  Much better glass than the Bushnell 3200 series.

A Leupold 4.5-14 would be a great scope also...a bit over your $500 mark when new. Used Leupolds can be a great buy, though. Wink  A pre-owned Leupold 3.5-10X40 with an a.o. would be a dandy.

A distant third for me would be a Weaver 4-16. Decent optics and tracking, nicely sized and an asst. of reticles make it worth considering. I've had a few of these as well as their 6-24 and they're pretty decent for the $.

But still way behind the Sightron or Leupold.

Sad experience(s)  have taught me to steer 'way clear of the 'B' brand (Burris) though others seem to have some luck with their stuff.

Burris, Barska, BSA....all start with a 'B'.  Hmmmm???  Coincidence, cosmic anomoly, or strange existential Gestalt?    You decide........ Whacko

Hey, you left out Brunton... does that mean they defy the "B brand" labeling?

I plead the fifth on Brunton, having had no first hand experience with their rifle scopes. The Brunton binocs I had were fine, though.

And to prove I'm not an evil, nasty scope profiler....the Bushnell (well, most of 'em) and the older Bausch and Lomb scopes are exempt from my 'B' list. Big Grin   -Al
