How clear would the 3-12 Sightron be on the higher magnigfication without an adjustable objective or side focus.

For centerfire scopes, parallax starts becoming an issue around 10X magnification. The factories normally set the scopes parallax free at 100-150 yds. (depending on mfg).
If you're going to be doing a lot of load work and shooting past 10X, an A.O. is a good idea. If the scope is going to be used for what I'd term 'normal' hunting duties and yardages, my advice is that you'll be fine. Side focus is the 'a.o.', if you will. The scopes with a true A.O. move a lens at the objective end to clear the parallax while the side focus scopes accomplish the same thing by moving a smaller lens along the length of the scope tube.
If the a.o. is what you want to go with, take a look at their 3-12 a.o. model. The mounting distance is pretty short on these so make sure that will work for 'ya......not sure what type of rig you're working with.
And half a 'c' note back on a great scope isn't hard to take, either.......... -Al

I appreciate this info. I was thinking about adding a 3x12 Sightron on a Weatherby Ultra Light 270 for deer hunting, but all of the AO models are a little on the heavy side. I like the Sightron scopes, but it sounds like the 3-9X42 HHR reticle might be the best choice.

Another thought, if this is a deer rifle and not going to see any target shooting. I would probably not want an AO since it is just another adjustment to make before you can take your shot. But you could preset your distance and be some what ok with that. Also that 3-9 you mentioned would have a wider field of view and more than enough magnification for longer shots. My target rifles are AO's and my hunting rifles are not.

Today I decided that I really didn’t need the added weight of a high magnification scope with A/O for my .270 Win Weatherby Ultralight so I ordered a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10X40 with B&C Reticle. The B&C reticle should work well with a 150 grain 270 round and the eye relief should be adequate for the recoil. My next step is to find an accurate load recipe for the Hornady 150 grain SST. |

Cost not being a factor, why would one choose the 3-9 over the 3-12? Same size, weight, FOV at lower powers... any downside to the 3-12, other than potential parallax issues?
Am interested in the Big Sky. Haven't had a chance to look through one, but hear they have better glass than Monarchs, 4200s, VX3s and are about on par with Conquests. Does that sound accurate?

The parralax won't be an issue as they are set for being free at 100 yards. I don't think even at 12x going further out that there would be any issue. As far as choosing one over the other, that would just be a personal preference type of thing. The glass is on par with Nikon Monarch, Elite 4200/6500, There are those that will always pick one of these as being better than the other, and the answer to that depends on whom you ask. With that in mind I'd have to call it a draw.
