Has anybody on the forum had any experience with reboring barrels?  I have a nice A-Bolt 300 WinMag with an octagonal barrel for sale; however, if it does not sell I have been reading up on barrel reboring with the thought of building a .375-.338 Chatfield-Taylor or 375 Ruger out of the rifle.  I believe ther is enough meat on the barrel to make this feasible.  Has anyone on this forum done this kind of thing with a rifle?  Who did the work, and how did the rifle work out?

Regards,

Just recently got a rifle back from Delta Gunshop/Clearwater Reboring. It was rebored/rechambered from .25-06 to 9.3x62mm. They also shortened the bbl from 26" to 20" and put a recessed target crown on it. I'm more than satisfied with the looks of the work. One thing, although minor, that concerned me was how they were going to remark the .25-06 on the bbl. They milled it,remarked it and it looks GREAT. Haven't been able to shoot it yet but hope to soon. I was going to post their web site but it seems they are redoing it. Here is their phone# 1-509-684-5855. The owner is Jim Dubell and will answer any questions you would have.

Thank you!  I look forward to hearing about how the 9.3 shoots!  Barrel remarking is a concern I have also.  Did thy reblue the milled area?

thats not true, the .358 line goes from 180gr to 310gr, and the .375 go from 200-350gr the choices of bullet styles i will admit for the .358 isnt as broad as that of the .375 but there are still a lot of good choices.

No they didn't reblue it or the muzzle because I may have a protective coating put on it anyways. It looks as if they put some kind of protectant on it but I also put a metal protecting clearcoat on it also for now.

Well, Ted is really correct, he must be a mind reader!  It is some kind of mathematical progression with me: .224 : .284 : .338x2 : .375  Maybe I'll squeeze a .358 in there someday, but I just really want a 375.  Big Grin

300, thatnks for the pix.  Nice stick!  I'd post the Abolt pic but I can't yet cuz I'm a grasshopper!

I have a drilling that is rebored fron 25-35 to 7x57R.
Shoots great and a perfekt solution for old nice guns with barrels you don't wanna change.
However here it's to expensive for anything else than fairly special guns.

Technika is correct.  With the cost of reboring, you might as well just rebarrel the rifle instead, as it will be easier and probably less expensive.  Reboring is really a good option for a special rifle, where rebarreling would either spoil the character of the rifle, or it would be difficult to do for whatever reason.

I measured the action in the ABolt, and it doesn't have a long enough ejection opening to eject a loaded 375H&H, although a fired case would eject fine.  It has a long enough magazine well opening for the H&H, but would require a new clip also.  Squeeze, I like the ballistics I have found on the 375 Ruger, which as a factory round has the advantage over the 375-338 wildcat IMO.  The 375-338 ballistics are pretty much the same as the Ruger, I think, from what I have found researching both loadings.  Heck, I was selling the ABolt to build a M70 Classic 375H&H anyway.  Maybe this reboring/rechambering plan is a better idea anyway... looks to be cheaper than rebarreling from what I can find out on-line!

if you were planning to use the abolt's action on this project wouldnt you need to change the head on the bolt?? isnt the .300 win a .532 head and the .375ruger is a .590 i believe??
