S&W M&P15-22: A .22 LR Tactical Rifle

The latest addition to the M&P15 family of AR-15 rifles is the M&P15-22. S&W have designed what they call “the ultimate .22LR platform”. From the press release:

“In designing the new M&P15-22, our engineers pulled out all of the stops to develop the ultimate .22LR platform,” said Tom Kelly, Vice President of Marketing for Smith & Wesson. “The rifle’s operating features, functionality and durability are exactly what you would expect from any of Smith & Wesson’s tactical rifles. By remaining true to the standard AR-15 design while offering all of the preferred features found on the M&P Rifle Series, the M&P15-22 is well suited for a variety of recreational shooting applications while also being an extremely viable training firearm for law enforcement and military personnel. Shooters will find the M&P15-22 to be a great firearm for multiple uses with the reduced recoil and economical .22LR caliber ammunition.”

The rifle features:

* A3 style flat top upper receiver
* A2 front post sight
* A2 rear sight
* M4 style collapsible stock
* Quad rail handguard

Specs:

Barrel length: 16″
Magazine capacity: 25 rounds
Barrel twist: 1:15
Upper Receiver: A3
Weight: 5 lbs (unloaded)
Length: 31″ (stock collapsed)

UPDATE: The MSRP is $499 (Matt from S&W PR confirms this),

they did a segment on them on rifleman or guns & ammo tv that they filmed during shot show, it was only a brief blurb but they sure look cool. i can see a lot of people taking advantage of the cheapness of 22lr for training use etc. plus put an acog and a sure fire on it and you will be the coolest kid on the block.

Actually I have been looking over the 22lrs myself and working on a analysis of it.  I have a document that summarizes what the options are.

CF2, If I send you a PDF file can you host it?

Uber-secret document size update:  Unable to trim excess size from data file.

Mission relative data must be retained in file size and format.

Wondering if mission data can just be posted here in one huge post.

Mission control operative CF2, please review previous PDF and see if I may post entire document as one huge post, including photos.

Photos of mission would have to be saved to the secret file then uploaded one at a time. The rest of the Mission can be launched I mean posted at any time. Whistling Fire at will.

Data burst in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1........

My main concern is to be able to use my .223 suppressor on the rifle....

SIG SAUER - SIG522

The Look and Feel of the Classic SIG556 ™ in Affordable .22 Rifle SIG SAUER, Inc., the leading manufacturer of commercial, law enforcement, and military firearms fuels the demand for the legendary SIG556 performance but in an affordable .22 LR caliber with the new SIG522 semi-automatic rifle. Featuring SIG556 parts including a Swiss type folding stock and polymer forend on a durable metal receiver with integral Picatinny rail, and a Mini Red Dot sight. The SIG522 provides the avid sport shooter plenty of action on a classic military style platform that give the look, feel and dependability of our full size SIG556.

Item Number SIG522001

  Caliber .22 LR

  Overall Length 29.8 in

  length w/Stock Collapsed 29.1

  Barrel Length 17 in

  Rifling 1 in 7 in

  Sight Radius 14.4 in

  Forearm Polymer

  Stock Type Swiss Type Folding

My question: Can this be threaded to accept the standard M4/M16 flash hider?  The photo below looks like it might, but you can’t really tell.  Doesn’t look like it receives the standard M4 style flash hider.

Those are kinda neat....you think the MSRPs are gonna all be in the same price range?  $500 bucks isn't too bad,  when you consider the price of .22 ammo.

Every model of each of those...  seems to be near $500.... EXCEPT for the Colt.  I saw an MSRP of $595 suggested for the Colt.  Someone elsewhere suggested $700 was the target asking price since it is a "Colt", but the consensus was that this was an unrealistic number.

 Thanks budperm.  Here is my summary.  Please let me know if you see any errors.

Weapon

Cost

Released

Barrel

Notes

SIG SAUER - SIG522

$500 ?

About to be released to market soon I think

No threads on barrel, doesn’t look to me like it can be modified to have threads.

A different look, I like it.

I am certainly intersted in acquiring one of these 22lr rifles.

There seems to be some interest here.... since this was the second thread in the last month or so that asked about the SIG or the S&W..... so I did a bit more research.

Here is the updated information.  I finally got around to hosting the file myself.

http://www.ick.bz/pdfs/22lr_options.pdf

First question, Do you see any errors in my document?

Second question, do you know any new information about release dates that are not shown in the PDF?

Third question, have you looked at these rifles? Apparently they were at the 09 Shot Show. I am looking to confirm that the Colt M4 in 22lr has a threaded barrel. Can you add any DETAILS that I am missing?

Thanks for your help. I hope you like the PDF file.
