I think when you get to this level of optical quality, it comes down to personal preference.  I would personally pick the Zeiss, but again thats personal preference.

have/use them both and it depends alot on how much you will use the lower power setting, (although the z6 is a 2x12) and desired reticle, as there is a lot of difference in the two. the lower setting on the zeiss gives a effect of looking through an innertube, up until about 4 you are seeing the inside of the walls of the scope. I like the tds reticle and the "picture" on the lowest setting on the z6 more. See helo's review on the 1.7x10 in this forum-- he didn't like the z6 reticle for low light. and that particular reticle I would agree. The tds doesn't have this problem. On the zeiss you can get any reticle they offer, and also have the scope made in the sfp if you want. With a Z600 or Z800 it just be the one.

I have a z6 2-12x50 with a 4a reticle and it's outstanding for low light conditions.

Helo tested a z6 with a plex reticle (I have one of those as well) and it's basically like the Leupold thin duplex reticle being much finer than a basic duplex retilce. The plex retilce is great for long shots and daylight but harder to pic up during low light conditions.

I wonder how the new VX3 would compare to the Zeiss VM/V. I haven't heard anything spectacular about the new Leupold from an optics standpoint. The thing that interests me most is the new beefed up erector assembly.

I can't comment on the Zeiss other than saying I am sure it is an amazing scope.  The Swaro is a great scope and I can highly recommend it.  My only suggestion would be that you not get the plex reticle.  Get a 4a if you do a lot of low light hunting.

THE VX3 is not an option:
I have tested one myself and while a slight optical improvement over the VXIII its not in this league.
-I dont like the STILL golden rod wire reticle than turns orange, bronze, etc.
-The apparent image is smaller do to the smaller occular lens. Even o nthe same magnification the image gives a smaller "apparent" image than its euro competition
-I hate the Leupold Duplex and their german #4, if premier still made the #4 for leupold then it might be an option. The duplex fades too fast for my taste
-The fast focus eyepiece that it has isnt really much of a difference than the VXIII, other than the threads. It is not like the VX7 fast focus eyepiece....

if Leupold made an illuminated reticle model scope without the 50mm objective, I might look. With Zeiss, I can hunt at night with the 42mm objective with no issues on 6-8x.
I also like the 30mm tube of the euros

Oh, like the Swaro Z6 comment at the end of the VX3 review, I'm sure there's not much difference between the Zeiss VM/V and the VX3 either. Wink

One thing that you might consider is looking through them as the reticle itself  may be a     factor that you like better in one vs the other.  As far as quality they are going to be very close.  I would rather have an illuminated reticle in a 4a or balistic reticle.

Actually Leupold does make some smaller than 50mm illuminated reticle scopes and the custom shop or kenton ind will custom engrave a balistic compensating tactical knob for your choice of cartridge and caliber.

Urimaginaryfrnd, have you seen the Z6 illuminated circle dot reticle?? I played with it today and it's real cool too!!! Very fast and with larger outside posts than the 4Ai (the 4Ai outside posts are thinner than the basic 4A). I would definitely consider it if I were to pull the trigger on a Z6i in 1.7-10x42 though the 4Ai is very nice as well.

I really dont care for the circle dot configuration I tend to prefer the red or amber triangle on a post  of the Trijicons.  The point of the triangle makes for very precise work and the whole thing is about right for anything fast.  I personally would never pass up a Trijicon to buy a Z6i eaven thought the Z6i has better glass.  It's about more than the glass the type of reticle is very important to me and having tactical knobs is important to me too to be able to dial in correction.  I just wish Trijicon would alter the 2.5-10x56 make it a 50 mm objective and add the new tactical knobs from the TR24.

I know what you mean about the Trijicon as I have an Acog on my "black rifle". The Z6i circle dot though is different than any circle dot I've seen with it's 4A black outer post, orange circle, black inner cross hairs, orange dot, multiple day/night settings, etc. Very quick.  Thunbs Up

I don't like a 56mm configuration either.

I also saw the new Trijicon green reticles today. I used to like the Trijicon amber color best but the green color seems even faster. The new 1-4x24 30mm scope is real nice too. Excellent
