I thought I had finally chosen my scope (a 4200), when I read some negative thoughts on the shorter eye relief.  Now I'm not sure if I should pay the extra for a Leupold VX-3.

side note-- I'm replacing an old VX-II (it got switched to another rifle) and never had a problem with it.

Are any of you guys running a 4200 on a 7mag?
Should I be concerned about black eyes and stitches?  Thanks for the insight, reading old threads here has helped me tremendously.

I haven't used a 4200 on a hard kicking rifle, but I would be hesitant on doing so.  I had a scope with 3.2 in of eye relief on my 338 win and it was a bit too short.  I realize the 338 has more recoil.  I tend to use butler creek covers on all my scopes and they shorten the eye relief a little.

Welcome to the OT!  You should be fine with the 4200 on a 7mag.

Have a Bushnell 3200, 3-9x40 on a Savage 116 in 338.

Have never been bit and have shot this a lot off the bench, could be I anchor the stock differently.

What ckk said about the Butler Creek covers:  younger son shoots a 30-06, with a Bausch & Lomb 1.5-6.  Has had some minor contact at times with the caps when bench shooting.

I have 4200's on my 30/06, 280 Ackley and 300 Win Mag. If eye relief was a problem they wouldn't be there.

I had a 4-16x40  4200  0n a musket for a while I did fine with it at 295lbs but every time my nephew 150lbs shot it he caught it in the eye.  There are some deals on new VX3 scopes on samplelist: http://www.samplelist.com/default.aspx?prod_type=1&hide_sold=False

I'm not using a 4200 on a 7mm and I'm not sure I'd want to. It should be ok but it depends on the weight of the rifle. I run a Burris Signature select my Tikka T2 Lite (7.3lbs scoped) in 300WM just to get the extra 1/2" of eye relief. With a bit less recoil or a bit more weight I'd consider a Nikon Monarch.

The 4200 really shouldn`t cause a recoil issue with a 7 Rem mag unless your a stock crawler. I had a 3x9 4200 on a 300 wsm Ruger compact and for awhile the same scope mounted on my 375 Ruger Alaskan. Never got whacked, but came close!! The Leupolds though will give the better eye relief, as now I use a 1.5-5x20 VX111 on the Alaskan.

Your shooting position along with your cheek position, will more determine if you get whacked or not.

I agree, not to worry on a 7mag.
