i would love to have a dog, but my wife doesnt think right now is a good time with our daughter being less than a year old, and i want the dog to be able to be inside when it needs to be (during the winter etc.) and my wife isnt in agreement. i would love to have a nice german short hair. the boys love dogs too. my wife never had any inside animals when she was a kid and i always did. plus she thinks all we need is a mutt from the humane society or the pound, and i want a high dollar pedigreed dog. she says a $50 pound dog can get run over just as easy as a $1000 pedigreed dog can.

she hates to deal with shedding, my #1 choice would be an irish setter if i could really have any dog i wanted. love their color and energy. my dad had a very nice one named pat when i was kid that dog was something else, to bad he got arthritis and had to be put down at the age of 12. he was a good dog. she thinks i should build a kennel outside with a dog house, i say no. so for now we will continue to be dogless.

I too don't contain my dogs  unless we are having a party, some times they get a little annoying begging and such.

I keep my dogs inside.  One reason is that I have never investigated a residential burglary where the home owner had a dog loose inside the house.  I have on the other hand been chased out of the back yard of a house when investigating a ringing burglar alarm as a police officer. I looked over the fence - everything looked ok I opened the gate and started checking for signs of forced entry.  About the time I got to the corner of the house and came around it an old german sheppard laying at the far end of the yard spotted me and the chase was on.  I hauled ass for the gate but it became apparent he was closing ground. I turned and shot two .357 rounds into the ground between us as he skidded to a stop and watched me politely exit his yard.

i had that happen, except it was an australian sheppard, and i was so lucky. i was mowing lawns at the housing complex for the company my dad works for, and i never even saw the dog until it was way to late. i got nailed in the calf on the right leg, and i had to beat that dog until i knocked it out. i went back to the office and found the owners wife at work, and told her at lunch time she may want to go make sure her dog was alive still as the blood was running down my leg. i made damn sure after that, that the dog wasnt in the back yard.
