The other morning I woke to the bark of a baboon sentry. I quickly located him and shot him.... with my camera!!!! These dudes raid the houses and make a gawd awfull mess. They are protected and not allowed to be harmed.

The bunny (or baboon) huggers would go ballistic! Some years ago (6 or 7 ) some dude had had enough and he walked into the street with his rifle and shot one of the baboons. There was hell to pay! These baboons are fearless. They enter the corner cafes and steal bread or sweets of the shelves etc!

Yesterday morning I went to the bottom of my driveway to open the gate. The next thing a baboon leaped out of one of the overhanging trees and made a dash for the fence, with my dog in hot pursuit. He was alone and must have been kicked out by the troop.

Their behaviour is rather interesting.
They are afraid or more cautious around men. They are not scared of woman and the male baboons would even stalk them. It appears as though they want to herd them into the troop! They are also not afraid of children. We have had a few (not many given the amount of contact) attacks on woman and children. Nothing serious, bite and scratch marks. If they are cornered they rip a dog to shreds.
I had a situation two years ago. We were picknicking inside a reserve. One of the female campers were cooking on an open fire. A male baboon walked up and sat about 3 yds away and watched her. She was rather scared. I came out of my tent and at the sight of a male he immediately ran away.(And I had shaved and combed my hair, so I had no idea what his problem was.)
As for target practise etc, some irrate people do shoot at them with catapults airrifles etc. But if caught they could face some serious issues with Fauna and Flora (no not two girls, but Nature Conservation). Edited by 8shots - March/12/2009 at 08:46 |

They do have very nasty looking canines. Would think a bite could be troublesome.

I saw a TV show once I think it was National Geographic where they said that Leopards prey on Baboons but once in a while a male Baboon will connect with his canines and kill the Leopard. I wonder if that is actually true.

During my safari in Namibia I developed a visceral HATRED for baboons - I took every opportunity to shoot them and loved it. If I go back, I think I would like nothing more than to spend the entire time hunting them - I wish I had brought a LRF and Zeiss Rapid-Z scope with me - we took some pretty long-range shots on them and I got very lucky, but would like some more advantages next time.
Nasty, filthy creatures.
