My wife was watching CSI.............and I was sitting  here as usual. They were investigating a crime in which someone was shot with a handgun with old ammo. According to the investigator, the first shot the powder didn't burn, leaving the bullet half way down the barrel. The second shot was fired, and the second bullet ran into the first, leaving a dent in the base of the first bullet, and pushing it out the end of the barrel. I know it's just a t.v. show, but I don't think I'm buying it.

I think they did this on guns and ammo and the bullet comes out but not with any velocity that would be close to killing anyone.

Funny you should mention.
I have my fathers S&W 38 Poice Special and It's on its 3rd barrel.  I remember dad coming home from the range and the barrel was all bloated and twice the size it should be for about 2.5"  Turns out there was 3 bullets stuck in it.  He had it replaced and timed and it shot okay for a few years of light use.  I got it and about the 3rd time I fired it one round had excessive flash & sparks out of the frame and back of barrel.  I closely inspected it and found the forcer cone cracked and flaired inside the frame from an obvious bullet impact.  I haven't shot it since and am afraid of it.  Under further inspection I found one position in the cylinder rotation that has backlash and will allow the cylinder to rotate about 1/3 of the bullets diameter backwards during firing, totally messing the timing up on that postion.   I plan on having the gun distroyed because it is not safe or worth repairing.

I sugggest anybody that has one to carefully check the timing & backlash of cylinder for every postion of rotation!

Damn my memory is getting bad!  Mine gun is a Colt 38 Police Special 4" bbl not a S&W.  I just pulled it out of the safe to verify.  Oh and the backlash did not occur everytime that position came up.

Yes, the pin is mounted on the hammer and pivots slightly. i can just make out the outline of the retaining pin on the side of the hammer.  The workmanship on this thing in so tight I can hardly see any seams, too bad I don't trust it.

Why do you object to my having it destroyed?  I am afraid that if it gets into anyone elses hands that don't know about its weakness that they will get hurt.

Well even in that condition it is collectable too some and it is a COLT if you dont want it take it somewhere have the pin removed sell it like that explained why,  and you have no worries  look on gun broker and see if it would be worth the effort? a good smith could fix it and barrels are cheap and plentiful. some who is interested knows this! just thought.

TIME OUT -- Hold that thought  find somewhere they are having a gun buy back and sell it to them.  Personally I would have it repaired by Colt. What you will find on those that are not in timing double action is that they will work flawlessly in single action mode.

Plastic Training Components

Do you want to get a little handgun practice at times you can't get to the range? Don't have a heavy-duty backstop in the garage? SPEER Plastic Training Components are the prescription you need for short-range practice. This isn't loaded ammo. We make the bullets and cases--you supply the power. A standard large pistol primer provides all the power needed to propel the reusable bullets at velocities between 300 and 400 ft/sec. Cases are reusable, too. You don't even need reloading equipment to assemble Speer practice ammo. The case/bullet system is available for 38/357 and 44 caliber revolvers. For the 45 Auto, use our bullet and a standard 45 Auto brass case with a drilled-out flash hole. A backstop for these bullets can be quickly built from a cardboard box and carpet scraps.

Bullets and cases are sold separately so you can replace lost or damaged bullets.

SAFETY FIRST: Never use propellant when loading Plastic Training components. Treat the resulting ammunition with the same respect given conventional ammunition; velocity is high enough to injure the skin. Use only in well-ventilated areas. Brush the bore every 12-18 shots to prevent accumulation of primer residue.

These little red and black plastic bullets use only a primer no powder and will shoot through a paper target in your basement. Smile  You could be having more fun with this than you think.

Really???/ I was told that there were more of these revolvers made than any other modern revolver in US history.  It is stamped on barrel "Police Positive 38 Special" . I was lead to believe that it wasn't worth repairing.

I'll have to investigate further.

They need to make these for rifles! Why can't someone invent a bullet that comes out at 3000 fps, doesn't make noise, and doesn't penetrate? Then I could sit on my deck, and shoot to the bean field down the street from my house, and not have to worry about copsBig Smile

A gun Buyback, Mmmm hadn't thought of that.  My biggest complaint before this malfunction was that the handle is way small for my big meathook.

Twenty years ago it may have not been worth repairing, but that's not the case now.  Now with that said, Colt is about the only place to get those guns fixed any more.  Colt is more complicated than S&W and most people do not want to work on them.
