Everybody has their personal preferences...I can tell you I've bought directly from both companies and I only had one hiccup with Bushmaster (getting an AR barrel, they took three times to get me what I asked for originally, but they sent me various spare parts each time (at my request) to help me recoup my postage for their foul-up.   My complaint about DPMS is that they won't give you any kind of discount without having a FFL, so I buy their stuff through Brownells (who will give me a discount that is very close to DPMS' dealer).

Both are great companies, sell quality products, & both have excellent customer service.

Sandsock,  Dont feel bad neither would give me a dealer discount with out a FFL on file with them (even if you dont buy items requiring a FFL).

After reading some very favorable reviews, my next AR will probably come from Stag Arms.

They have a "true" left hand version AR that I lust for!!

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

I tend to prefer Rock River and like the midlength quad rail flat top collapsable stock models which sometimes come with their match trigger which is an improvement over a standard one.

I can't vouch for DPMS, but I have a bushy and another bud has had one for several years.  Put a lot of chucks and pd's down with them and haven't had a hiccup yet.  One of my favorite guns to shoot.

They are both owned by the Freedom Group of companies that are in turn owned by Cerberus. This is the same group that also has Remington, Marlin and now Dakota. DPMS and Bushmaster have separate manufacturing facilities.
I have spent time with the M4 variants of both companies and both seem to be well made. The folks over at http://www.ar15.com/ have tons of information and almost any question can be answered through a search.

If you want to save some money and just want a basic AR.  Take a look at Del-ton kits. All you need to do is buy a lower from an FFL and asseble the lower which is very easy.  All their parts are made in the same machine shop as bushmaster, they just stamp del-ton on some of them.  All my ARs have some or all delton parts on them and they all function excellent and are accurate.  No need to pay extra for a name when you can get one just as good from Del-ton.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

DPMS offers (when in stock) basic kits similar to Del-ton.  From my limited experience, DPMS, Del-ton, Bushmaster, and Rock River all make good weapons.  Many of the members of ar15.com are biased towards one weapon system or another, but you will get good information on the site.  Having owned DPMS, Bushmaster, and Del-ton I can tell you they are all great for the basic AR package.  Getting your hands on a rifle or kit may take some looking though.
