What is the mystical allure of the Remington Model 700 as a base/starting point for a custom or specialized gun? Everywhere (don't you hate generalizations) you look, the custom gun is based off the Rem. 700 action. I read that some are using the Savage action, but by in large it is the Rem. Never had a Rem., only Rugers and Savage and curious to the reason why they are consider the platform off which to start.

Honestly don't know but they're kinda like a small block Chevy, aftermarket parts are everywhere. Could be just the fact that there has always been so many of them to be had since they're so popular, just like the Chevy.

I think since they are used as military sniper rifles, they must be the best. You know how that train of thought goes. I traded one for a Weatherby Vanguard! I know it's a terrible offense, but at least the Vanguard shoots. The Remington was terrible the day I brought it home.

In their day they and the Winchester Model 70 were the gold standard. Much like as someone suggested, the small block Chevy. I owned a BDL back in the 80s and it was a beauty but it wouldn't be on my short list today.

Several reasons:
1. They are mechanically simple; 2. Round cylindrical receiver makes them easier than other action designs to chuck and true up in a lathe; 3. Simple 2-pin trigger assy retention makes trigger upgrades easy; 4. Stock inletting is comparatively simple compared to other action types; 5. The round receiver footprint makes proper bedding easier; 6. One of the fastest lock times among bolt action rifles; 7. The sheer popularity of the M700 means that there are more aftermarket parts for this action than other bolt actions. |

Like my custom barrel maker once said, "cause there are so easy to make 1/2 inch shooters out of". In short, they have a proven design of accuracy. Just take a look at all the clone actions on the market today from Borden, Stiller, Hart, Phoenix Machine, Nesika, Lawton, Ed Brown, Pierce and on and on. Fast lock times, simple to machine, stiff receivers, endless aftermarket products, easy to bed are but of a few of the reasons why they are the platform of many custom builds to this day.

Your 700 speaks well. Very nice. I'm sure it gets old shooting dime size groups. |

That make sense. Ease of use = large market share and/or popular = large aftermarket selection. |

I know parts man parts but there are as many parts for other actions as there are for the Remington' s about the only short fall is the Ruger why? Sako has always been a favorite Savage is real popular, now the Howa will be coming on strong I'm looking for one now for a project. just when a post like this is made and if everyone states the remmy. People tend to believe this is the only option and it clearly is not. But it is indeed a fine choice by all means. Edited by rifle looney - February/25/2009 at 19:49 |

There is nothing real sexy about a 700 and it would be low on my list for building a wood stocked safe queen, but the beauty of the 700 is not in esthetic's, it's in practicality and function. If you what a mountain/sheep type rifle, the 700 makes a great choice because it is light by comparison to others such as the Model 70, Sako or Ruger 77. If you want to convert your gun from a drop box magazine to a blind magazine or vise versa, the 700 makes that easy. Trigger options are endless depending on your wallet and IMO a good gunsmith can make a 700 trigger break as clean as almost anything out there. If you want a faster lock time, again a simple firing pin assembly switch is all that's necessary and can be done by the owner. Custom bottom metal assemblies are available to give you blind, drop box or detachable as an option with little fuss or expense. It's certainly not that the 700 is the perfect choice for all applications, but if you want a rifle that is relatively inexpensive, reliable and is upgradeable it makes a tough act to follow.

Roy. not too argue but I never said anything about a safe queen nor aesthetics, other than that you're assumption is relevant.

What about the Savage action? I know some people can not get past having the barrel nut due to its looks. I know when someone wants a purpose built custom, wheter that purpose is a used hunting tool or safe queen, they want form(beautiful lines) and function. I don't mind the barrel nut and what it offers in the way of setting tolerances makes it an attractive option. But that is how I see it.
