What is the difference between 4831 & 4831sc other than the latter being short cut for ease of metering?  What is the deal about R17?  Seems like everyone wants it and it is in short supply.  Why is this?  Starting to reload for my .270.  4831 dates back to Jack, but I didn't know if the sc is much different so I thought I would start my quest here.

Yes the sc meters better  so more accurate flow or charge wght. re 17 is supposed to give higher velocities but? they are based off the speer manual which is on the slow side anyway?
its also more taylored for the wsm cartridges?

I reloaded for my friend's .270 Win for 20+yrs.  130gr Speer sptz flat base w/more H4831 than the max loads list today. I believe todays H4831 has a bit faster burn rate than what I was using(stash is gone). It's still arguably the top powder for the .270 Win,at least w/130gr bullets. I doubt I'll reload for my FWT but if I did I'd probably try RL22 as it shows top velocity and I use it in two other cartridges I load for.

H4831 and h4831sc are identicle in burn rate.

Yeah, they are not the same.  Still have the question, what is the deal about R17?  According to Alliant's web page, the R17 will push a 130gr 3136 fps and a 150gr 2921 fps.  It says these #s are MAX and from the latest SPEER reloading manual, did not give a #.  I have an older SPEER manual #10 and for 4831 it gave a max fps for a 150gr 2827.  Just wonder which to try as don't have any power bought yet.

I am currently working on loads for my 270Win using RE17.  My gun seems to really like 52.5 to 52.9gr of RE17 with 130gr SSTs & interbonds  both clocked in at 3050fps+/- 15.
Both SSTs & Interbonds are ballistic tip & boattail design
