This past Sat we had our first field shoot. With my Rem still in hospital I was forced to use my Sako 300H&H. I did not feature in the comp, but was happy with my overall performance. Specially the gongs with 200gr SGK was a treat. The kudu are in serious trouble this hunting season!

Is this part of the requirements for a PH?

Was part of the testing to have you shoot with your weak arm?  Or are you a lefty?  That explains alot if you are.

8, Great stuff.  I LOVE IT when you post pictures like this... I don't have to wear the suit.
Now, 'splain the range to me.  Looks like a LOT of fun.

BD, the animals in the back are the farmer's cattle. We had a fire going in the background in case of "accidental" shooting for an instant barbecue (or braai as we call it.)
The "super sexy hunter pose"? Well ,best no further comment!

Chris, the "field shooting" is a club event for all members. Some members take it seriously and use varmint style rifles and high end scopes with up to 25x magnification. Others come for the fun or to practise for hunting using their hunting rifles. So this is not a PH training event.
At the end of the year each region throughout South Africa field a team and compete for national colours. (PS, yes that is me the lefty "modelling" the use of a Sako 300H&H under field conditions in the weak arm position!)

Kickboxer,
The field is set up with springbuck at 200 m. impala at 100m, warthog at 38m and gongs. The gongs are at 100m, 150, 175, 190 and 200m.
We take 5 shots per target so twent shots in the event. The gongs are 30 points for a hit.
The animals score 30 points for a brain or heart shot, 20 points for neck and lungs and 10 for a vital hit. You score a minus 15 point for a non vital shot eg a jaw shot, stomack, hind leg or outside the vertebrae on the neck. A clean miss is nil points.
All are timed events, with 45 sec allowed for the warthog, which is done standing. The impala is done kneeling with 90 secs, the springbuck and gongs prone with 120 secs.
We have other field shoots where the animals and gongs are placed in the veld (not a rifle range) with all distances unknown. Rangefinders etc are not permitted. This brings in the element of range estimation.
