That all depends upon the shooter, the conditions, and the target.  Lots of people use 10x for 1000 yards.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

Used a Vari-XIII 3.5-10x40AO at 10X for shooting groundhogs out to 400yds and more with no problems...................if I did my part.

The magnification is only part of it.  A clearer scope will be better farther away than a poor scope. Magnification without quality becomes a waste of money.

I run mine at 10x out to 7-800 yds no problem. Usually for me the wind is the limiting factor in accuracy, not the scope. My scope goes to 14x, but many times the mirage will kill you....and it's not even warm here yet.

GOOD point silver! Had a friend brag up his Atec when they first came out until he looked through both his and my Vari-XIII at the longer ranges.  Both maxed out at 10X.

As long as the scope hold zero it's accurate. You're eyesight will determine the effectiveness of the power at any given range. Provided you have good glass. Fixed 4 powers can be used effecyively at 1000 yards. That's the equivalent of seeing without a scope at 250. The biggest thing is can you see the target with the power you choose at you pre determined max range? Only you can accurately answer that question.
