Is 2.5-10x enough for the 1-600yd work but capable of 1000yd and still seeing the 6" marker?

yes in a good scope a 2.5 to 10 is a nice choice - very useful up close and adequate at distance.  10 x is at 1000 yds is like 1x at 100 yds so it's workable. For most applications you are better of with the low end than with the high end but it all depends on application and scopes are use specific. Sometimes you give up a little on the low end for a huge gain on the high end - like the difference between a 3-9 and a 4-16 seems worth the trade off unless you are working under 100 yds and really need rapid acquisition.

If you're talking about the scoring marker on the 1000 yard target, yes it's perfectly adequete.
We often use just 3/4 inch white pasters on the shot holes so we can get a more precise placement location, and 10x pulls those out nicely.

Well, Im confused now.Whacko

Friend of mine swears by magnification. He is quite experienced and told me that in order to shoot smaller targets, eg varmints on 400 to 600 yards I must have 16-20x magnification.  Then I see many say that 10x magnification is enough for shooting this distance?  Whats the story here and are there any downsides in having a higher power scope??

It depends on what you are shooting at.  Little tiny varmints, I would prefer more mag as well.  Larger targets like deer, elk, or man sized steel or paper targets 10x is good.  Targets are easier because the target is usually large and you have a center point to shoot at.  Small varmints you need to be able to see them well in order to shoot them.

Downside to higher mag is increased mirage, more shake, harder to find targets. etc etc.  But nice thing is you can always turn a high mag scope down but not the other way around.  Wink

 True dat.
But keep in mind that Mike is not talking about a 10x Barska or BSA here. Probably more like Nightforce or US Optics, I assume.

There is 10x and there is 10x...
