Hot-Rods

Sandra Hernandez, The 33 News

February 15, 2009

Chris Farris is proud of his 19-92 S-10 truck. Sprucing it up cost him about $15,000. He say, "I guess you you make room for your hobbies I guess ha ha ha."

There were about 300 hot rods at the Autorama at Dallas Market Center. The nation's economy doesn't seem to be putting a dent on this craze. Farris says he'll do just about anything for his hobby, "Definitely cut back in expenditures like going out and eating and stuff like that just trying to save as much money as possible to put as much money into the truck as possible."

This 1934 Model "A" Sedan sits very close to the ground. Fixing it up was a seven-month labor of love for Brad Meredith. He says, "With my own money it's about $10,000 to build this car." He admits he doesn't have deep pockets but saved some cash by doing 89 percent of work.

Local shops where car enthusiasts get everything from an oil change to a full exterior upgrade say business is booming.

Glenn Martini Vice President of Quantum Performance in Farmers Branch caters to that passion for hot rods and says, "People are still coming in through the door business hasn't really dropped off at all. Super chargers can run anywhere between 6 and 10 thousand dollars type of insulations the exhaust systems are can be 800 to 2-thousand dollars."

Hot-rodders are proving to be more resilient than some expected. Meredith adds, "I'm just trying to continue the hot rod tradition and see it through."
It's an interest that seems to be growing even among the younger generation. A little boy says, "I like this kind of truck little and sitting low." Another one utters, "I like the paint job."

Thank you guys! It really made everything worth it. It was a similar feeling to shooting my first buck. It's been a long time since I have had something like this to be proud of.

Thats Awesome.  My son is in the process of building up a 1986 El Camino with a 383 stroker VatoPolice  Sounds like a cop magnet to me but what can I say.
