Hi there,

I'm planning to set up a Remington 700 Police (20" barrel 308W) and I'm wondering what glass should I use. I'm considering the following scopes:

--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Leopold VX-III 3.5-10x40
Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40mm
Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40mm Long Range
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Burris Black Diamond Scopes
     2.5-10x44
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Bushnell Elite 4200 Rifle Scope
     2.5-10x40
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Nikon Tactical Rifle Scopes
     2.5-10X44
     2.5-10x44 Illuminated mil-dot
Nikon UCC Series Rifle Scopes
     4-12x40
     3.5-10x50 Illuminated
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Weaver Tactical Scopes
     3-9x40
     4.5-14x40
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------

How far are you planning to shoot? What are you planning to shoot? Paper, varmints, etc.

We could use a little more info to help you.

Welcome to OT.........

Hello!

I plan on distances from as close as 50 yards till 400 yards. Basically paper targets, but I would like to try some varmints, boars, deers, ...

Have fun!

Out of the scopes you mentioned, I like the 2.5-10x44mm Nikon Tactical.

That will be my next scope on my Remington VS .308.

I shoot paper targets more than anything else anyway.

The Nikon 2.5-10x44mm Tactical scope would be a good choice. I would stay away from the illuminated Mil-dot model though. I do not believe an illuminated reticle is really neccessary in most target shooting applications.

You listed scopes that fit very different budgets, so a lot depends on how much money you are willing to spend.  My pick overall would be Burris Black Diamond, but Nikon Tacticals are excellent as well (pricey though).  On the other hand, if you plan to use mildots for range determination you may want to take a close look at Weaver Tactical scopes since their reticle is in the first focal plane (i.e. you can range at any magnification).

Yeah, I'm just not real crazy about a lit reticle anymore. I used to be though!

I have had several, with a S&B L7 being the best I ever used.

Glass, coatings, laser etched reticles have come a long way, and I don't feel the illuminated reticles are worth it. Maybe I'm wrong.

They have really went up in price in the last few months!! I looked at several 2.5-10x44's on the net last year for around $600. Now, they are talking $800-$900 for the same scope!! YIKES!!

What happened?!?!?!

"What happened?!?!?!

Manufactures are really cracking down on MSRP's (Manufactures Suggested Retail Price's) this year. Going as far as cutting dealers off if they don't advertise to their price.

Brady, I wasn't cracking on SWFA or anyone in particular.

It just seems that the Nikon Tacticals have gotten really expensive since last year, across the board.

They have went up around $200 or so since this time last year.

Just reduced the list a little bit, but also considering Schmidt&Bender.

--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Weaver Tactical Scopes
     3-9x40
     4.5-14x40

--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Nikon Tactical Rifle Scopes
     2.5-10X44
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Leopold VX-III 3.5-10x40
Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40mm
Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40mm Long Range
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Burris Black Diamond Scopes
     2.5-10x44

--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------

Why I must stay away from the illuminated reticles?

Yeah I know.

Nearly everyone that is an authorized dealer will have the same prices. Places that are not authorized dealers buy from dealers that are, and dont have to sell at the MSRP. Either that or they are breaking the MSRP.

Who knows why they want to bump up their MSRP price so much. Especially on a scope that is struggling to compete with other tactical scopes.

Stay with the Nikon and drop the Leupolds. If you are going as pricey S and B check Zeiss or Swaroski.

The Leupolds you listed would be a good choice for your application. They are rugged reliable, and have have excellent customer service if you do have a problem. Their custom shop can change reticles, target knobs, make BDC reticles and knobs to tailor fit your preferred load.

The Nikons I've seen have been nice scopes. I've never used one long enough or harshly enough to recommend one but a lot of people swear by them.

One scope you over looked was the Super Sniper. They are excellent scopes that will give a $800 - $1000 scope a run for the money in clarity and repeat trackability. For your situation in a fixed power I'd recommend a 10x with standard height  Badger Ord rings and a 20 moa Badger Ord base (you may not need the added 20 moa right now but if you do shoot longer ranges in the future you will have the extra elevation).

Yes the Nikons are becoming a bit overpriced, just like Leupold.

Weaver has dropped their Tactical line and Nikon is rumored to be following suit.

Have not contacted Nikon for confirmation but have heard that they will not be offering them anymore.  Their site only shows four models now.  Also heard that Premier Reticle sent them a letter to stop using the 2nd Gen type reticle that they have a patent on.  As soon as I hear from Nikon I will post the real scoop.

That sucks.

I wanted to try that Weaver Tactical.  Oh, well!
