ok old fart! ha ha....  I was at the range yesterdy shooting my 17HMR at 50 and 100 yds.  I was using a Redfield Golden 5 Star 4-12X40 AO.  I used the 4x at 50 and 7x or 8x at 100!  Any higher settings than that and I could see the scope "shaking" By your standards, I'm an old fart too (45) and my eyes aren't the greatest!  You really won't need anything more than a good ole 3-9.

 have the Bushnell 4200  4-16x40 on my bolt action 22 and is seems to be a good choice.
