At the request of our benefactor, I performed a test. I apologize for my poor marksmanship...
All I could find of the bullet, a 350gr Hornady jacketed soft point at 2000fps. Perhaps due to my poor aim, did not penetrate the ocular...did crack/pulverize lens. As is shown, that fragment hit dead center. Aim was slightly high. Bullet fragmented and went in different directions. Fragment penetrated bell and knocked off windage knob. Fragment penetrated body and knocked off boresighter adjustment knob, almost got the elevation knob. I do not believe anyone would want to be on the ocular end, even if the bullet did not penetrate. Knocked the scope about 12 feet from where it was set up on a fallen tree. The parallax adjustment ring I still have not found. Sorry I am such poor shot. Perhaps if I had hit dead center, it would have been even more dramatic.

Interesting test there, Dan!
The Mythbusters guys did the same test not too long ago. Even at very close range, they never could get a bullet fired from a .30-06 to penetrate completely through the scope and exit the ocular, because the curved lenses always deflect the bullet off-center. They declared it "busted," concluding the story about Carlos Hathcock supposedly doing it with an -06 against an enemy sniper (along with the same being depicted in a couple movies) was a myth. What, there were no trees left, so you needed some other target for the Lott?
I can imaging the face of the person at the Simmons receiving department. Perhaps, you should finish the attached letter with something along the lines of: "you should see the guy who was holding the rifle with that scope on it." ILya |

Here's a link to a video of that Myth Busters episode.
Dan,
I bet you hit it dead center because you got the bullet all the way down to the turret assembly.

Wow, their scopes all "burst" at the bell just like the Blazer did. I believe if I had been using the full metal jacketed 500gr Dangerous Game rounds, it MIGHT have worked. That soft point definitely fragmented.
OK, I'm not finished. There will be another scope, another day. The .458 Lott RULES. BTW, I read somewhere, years ago, that Gunny Hathcock had always told people he actually hit the other sniper in the eye. Everyone thought it was a better tale for it to have gone through the scope. No knowledge of whether that is true or not.

I've got a few XOTIC scopes that we can't sell and they "were" supposed to be destroyed. I can send you one of those. It has a 56mm objective and a 30mm tube so your odds increase a little. You might also try adding some weight to the top of the scope to help fix it in place.

I shot a XOTIC right through the objective lens and it did that exact same thing. I wonder why they do that with the objective bell?

How far away are ya'll shooting them from?
Send me one I'll film a point blank range 3inches or less from crown to lens with a .338 winmag with a 250gr Accubond. or a 300winmag with a 200gr accubond. just to see if distance matters.I like to destroy stuff as you all know.

Uh, you'd have to sign some major disclaimers before I'd have anything to do with that and I don't have those kind of disclaimers.
