I want to be able to shoot deer size game at 300 yards in good light and 100 yards or less in very low light. I would also like to be able to take very close and rapid short range shots. Will a 1.25-4x24 be able to do this effectively? I'm looking at the Elite 4200 and Trijicon TR21. The round is 270. Thanks.

4X at 300 yds would be roughly equivalent of shooting with irons at 75 yds.  Certainly doable on deer sized targets.  The 1.25X would be excellent if things get up close and personal and the Elite you mentioned is a fairly compact rig.  Exit pupil is good through the entire mag range so I say go for it, others here will give you their opinion.

For me, my 1-4x20 is good from about 10 feet to 200 yards.  My 2-8x36 is good from about 30 feet to 300 yards, and is brighter.

Yes it is certainly doable. Both scopes listed are going to be very good for the purposes you mentioned.

If you have no visual problems, 4x is plenty good for 400yds.  The 1.25-4x should be very good for your purposes.

................If you wish to take rapid and quick shots for the closer ranges, a 1.25x or a 1.5x power on the low end is ideal.
You`ll have both eyes open acquisition and aiming for some very quick speed with nice and wide FOVs as well. 4x on the high end is enough for deer sized game, even out to 400-500 yards with good eye-sight.

I rotate a 1.5-5x20 VX3 between a 300 WSM and a 375 Ruger.  Got a friend with a fixed 4x on his 7mm Rem Mag. For long kill shots, some hunters, not all, seldom go over 5x or 6x anyway. The more you magnify, the more scope wobble you`ll have on a target. Too much wobble delays your shot.

The new 30mm tubed lower powered Trijicon with NO objective bell, should offer enough mounting tube length for your 270 Win. 270 Win I presume? The 1" tubed Trijicon with the objective bell may not offer enough mounting tube length, unless you use those butt ugly offset rings.

Both the Trij and the 4200 are very good choices. For low lite, go the Trijicon.

A low range variable of some sort will work well for you.  I have a few of those and my favourite for the money is Bushnell Elite 1.25-4x24.  Even in low light it is a surprisingly effective scope.  Another very nice scope is Sightron S2 Big Sky 1.25-5x20.  In goo dlight it has a little more reach, but in low light the Elite 4200 does better since the little Sightron has a comparatively thin reticle that is harder to see in very low light.

In the end it comes down to how much money you want to spend and which rifle this is going on.  Trijicon TR21 is a good scopoe in it own right, but I never quite got used to the substantial change in eyerelief as you change magnification.  In that regard, I think the new TR24 (1-4x24 is a better option).
