Are these binocs any good.  Looking for something inexpensive to throw in my hunting pack.  Looking at the 8x36 in the EX or 8x42 in the Excursion.

ted,

I have not had the privelege of looking through the Excursions but I did look at the Excursion EX and I was not particularly thrilled with the unit I was examining. Edge performance was poor as was the alignment of both barrels.

I would suggest you consider one of two options. As for the last month or so the price of the Bushnell Legends has come down well over $100...at least for the 8x42 model. They were originally selling over $300 but are now down at $209 several places. These are definitely a step up from the Excursions and Excursion EXs. The reason for that price decrease is because Bushnell is coming out with the Legend Ultra ED. An ED version of the Legen with a notably wider field of view.....which leads me to my second suggestion. I have seen the Legend Ultras (not yet available) listed for as low as $240 though $290 seems the going rate. You might want to wait a bit and consider them as well.

The Zen Ray ZRS model which retails right at the $200 price point might also be worth considering as I know of several individuals who already have them on order with high expectations.

Just some things to think about.
Frank

Thanks I'll keep my eye out for the Legends.  Also liked the Nikon trailblazer.

Thanks for the info FrankD, I wasn't aware the legends were getting an upgrade.  I have a pair of 8x32 legends that I quit like.

I had zenray older model and thought it was fairly good. Now, I am torn between getting ZRS HD vs ZEN ED.

Ted,

One word of advice on the Nikon Trailblazer, they are not phase coated roof prism bins like the Monarch. The lack of phase coating produces a slightly dimmer, less sharp image. In my opinion I would opt for the Leupold Acadias at the $200 price point, the recently mentioned Zen Ray ZRS or possibly the remodeled Vortex Diamondback set to debut shortly.

Lucytuma,

The newer Legend EDs just debuted at the recent SHOT show. I have only seen pics on the web so far. I do have a pair on order and will comment on them once I receive them. They do offer the previously mentioned ED glass plus they will have a 420 foot wide field of view (8x) and a 340 foot wide field of view for the 10x.

....and some other niceties to boot.

;)

Frank,

Where have you seen pics of the new Legends?  I can find the new Legend Ultra spotting scope, but not the binoculars

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

lucznik,

The pics in question were on birdforum in the main binocular discussion forum but it is now moved into the Bushnell Forum. There was a link in the original post of the thread directly to a blog with info and pics on the Ultra binoculars.

If I can dig one up I will post it here.
