Hey guys, just looking for thoughts and insight on the discontinued Mato.  I see they're holding their value, how are they as shooters?  Any and all info appreciated.

The only negative thing I've heard about the Mato is that it has a detachable magazine box that needs to be fitted by Beretta IF you should want a spare magazine. I haven't heard anything else but favorable things about the Mato. I believe the early ones had Lothar Walther barrels which is a good thing. Maybe you will get lucky and John B could share some info on these. Unless I'm mistaken, the Mato has a Dakota 97 action.

Thanks Roy, I dont know alot about the Mato but I do believe Dakota had some input, what I don't know.  I've been hashing over buying one in "Pyro-270" but am trying to gather more info to justify the $$$$.  Anyone have any specs on it?

Beretta clubhouse says Dakota action.  I thought it as a Mauser 98

I've got Rifle Magazine from 2001 w/a review of the Mato by Brian Pearce.  He tested the synthetic stock version in .280 Rem. Basically says that it's a HIGH quality Mauser 98 style action made from fine grade bar stock w/a cold hammer forged chrome-molybdenum steel bbl that has to  pass several strict tests and inspections. Trigger assembly resembles a M700 and is adjustable for weight of pull and overtravel. The stock is made of Kevlar, fiberglass, graphite, plus an alumimum bedding block Says it weighs 8lbs w/o scope and has a 23.6"bbl. The Mato came with two DBM's. Not much else to add other than the synthetic version retailed for $1,117 and the Deluxe for $2,470. Oh,and he bought the rifle.

I have 2 Matos.  The first one I bought used was a 300 win mag.  I liked it so well that I bought one new in 338 win mag.  One of my friends liked mine so well he bought one in 30-06.

As mentioned, they have a Lothar Walther 24" barrel, HS Precision stock, Dakota 97 action, Rem style trigger and 3 position safety.  The action is controlled round feed and very smooth and positive.  Personally I like the magazines a lot, they are long enough to not have issues with seating to the lands.

Some pics

The 300 win mag is one of my favorites and what I shot my last Elk with.  I got tired of pushing the 338 win mag to try and get the velocity I wanted so rebarreled it to a 338 RUM.  They make a great platform for a custom rebarrel

Excellent well made guns.  I really can't think of any factory made guns that I feel compete with the quality of what the now discontinued Matos exhibited.  Buy one if you get the chance.

Does anyone know why Beretta discontinued production of the Mato?

They discontinued production right after they bought Sako/Tikka, making it pointless to continue providing yet another bolt action rifle.

I have an identical Mato in .300 Win Mag with the grey HS Precision stock as sakomato.  As stated, the action is a Dakota M97, though I wasn't aware of it having a Lothar Walther barrel.  Mine is finicky, but shoots well with handloads it likes.  The only difference between mine and sakomato's rifle is I replaced the stock trigger with a Jewell unit on mine.

The only issue I've had with mine is with a full magazine, sometimes it can be tricky to get the magazine fully latched.  You have to use a bit of force on mine to get it snapped into place with a full magazine (no problem with an empty or partially full mag).  I've had the magazine drop from the rifle several times because of this.  Once properly attached, the magazine is secure, though, and it has a cleverly designed bottom that looks just like a hinged floorplate.

Are they worth the $1200.00 or so that most are asking for them?

I think so, when you consider the fact it uses a quality action, a unique HS Precision stock in a slender, classic shape that isn't used on any other rifle, a pretty good barrel, and a unique detachable magazine design.  It's a quality rifle!  I paid $900 for mine new, but that was 8 years ago.

Is it worth $1200? As far as I'm concerned, yes.

I'm interested in the Mato because it is different, and seems to be well made.  I can't afford the really unique stuff but I'm trying to upgrade some of my rifles to something alittle different, I don't want safe queeens.

Maybe this will help you. Dakota is selling new 97's with a synthetic stock for $3300. The new one has a Douglas barrel and a unnamed stock maker. Sounds to me like you would be getting your monies worth with the Mato.

Have to concur about the exceptional quality of this firearm. I own a 338 Win Mag and wouldn't change a thing to this classic.....they combined the best of the Mauser 98 extracto and the pre 64 winchester action with a fluted bolt and some of the finest forging's I have seen on a production gun. The only drawback is the DB magazine....they aren't made...called Beretta and they can retro-fit the gun for a hinged floor plate...why mess with a classic? I called Dakota who confirmed they made the actions and had serious issues with Beretta regarding the mag issue. personally I feel dakota stopped supplying the actions since they were competing with their own 4000 dollar guns.........This Gun has the absolute finest trigger in my vast colection...including guns at more than twice the price...no creep and breaks like glass.....and finally I just purchased an original deluxe stock walnut stock thru Beretta directly for $130...yes  $130!!!!...absolutely Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Check it out....wanna find the king of the collection...a 375 H&H....should have bought it when I had a chanse 5 years ago....whould make a fine sibling to my Winchester 375H&H   super express...pre 64....I'm outBandito
