I know this is over your price range but it is worth the difference on your  .243 if you are going after varmits.
For the 22:
849398 Weaver 3-9x32 RV9 Classic Rimfire Rifle Scope Weaver 3-9x32 RV9 Classic Rimfire Rifle Scope
  • Matte
  • Dual-X
  • 1"
  • Adjustable Objective
SWFA: $199.95

this is a decent scope at a bargain price but no adjustment for parallax which you would need with a 22.
8435 Nikon 3-9x40 Team Primos Riflescope Nikon 3-9x40 Team Primos Riflescope
  • Matte
  • BDC
  • 1"
  • Team Primos
SWFA: $199.95

This scope is the bargain of the Zeiss line and would also be a nice .243 scope:
5214259920 Zeiss 2.5-8x32 Conquest Rifle Scope Zeiss 2.5-8x32 Conquest Rifle Scope
  • Matte
  • Z-Plex
  • 1"
  • Etched Glass
  • 2nd Plane
SWFA: $399.95

Here is another rimfire scope that should be a good choice:
LEU58700 Leupold 2-7x28 VX-I Rimfire Rifles

First off, welcome to The O.T. forum by SWFA.

For squirrel hunting (which could be in low light/dark trees) and target shooting I would say you need something in a 3-12 or 4-16 range.  3x or 4x will be low enough for squirrels and 12x to 14x will be plenty for target shooting at 100 yards.  You will also need something with an adjustable objective to correct for parallax (this can be huge on a rimfire).  Reticle will need to be a standard plex type but not too heavy.  Illuminated would be nice for squirrels, but not required.

Getting all of this for $250. or less narrows down the field to something like these.

The Burris Ballistic Plex and or the Nikon BDC are really nice on rimfires and make longer shots a lot easier.
