The VX3 has VX7 glass, Dual Erector Assembly,  Xtended Twilight Lens System, Diamond Coat Lens coatings, and is purged with Argon/Krypton gas instead of Nitrogen. The VX3L also has VX7 glass. The only diffrence is the VX3L has the cut out of the bottom of the scope and pop up turret technology. If you are wondering how in the world they are goin to sell their VX7'S with the new VX3 carrying these features. It has a 4X Erector.Loco These new VX3's seem to be a good deal to consider.

You have the Leupold VX7 3.5-14X50 @ $1499.95

 You have the Leupold VX3 4.5-14X50 @ $759.95

The only Differences in the two are, the VX7 has a 4X Erector, a side focus, and Pop up Turret Technology. They even both have the Leupold Extra Customer Care Warranty. Almost half the price for basically the same scope.

For a $1000 savings I could live with the 3x erector.

I would guess they haven't been selling a lot of VX7's anyway.   Looks like they're offering a lot of scope for the money.

Are you sure the grade of glass is the same or is it the same coating technology used.

The lens size is a little different, but the grade and prescription of the glass is the same. This is all info from Leupold direct.

From the Leupold website regarding VX-7 lenses

Now your hunt can reach further into the twilight than ever before possible, with our exclusive new Xtended Twilight Lens System™. It goes a step further than even the Index Matched Lens System®, using Leupold’s® index matched glass with wavelength specific lens coatings designed to optimize the transmission of low-light wavelengths. When most scope manufacturers quote percentage of light transmission, they usually mean at 550 nm, the green wavelength where the human eye is most sensitive. The challenge is that in twilight conditions, green light disappears and blue/violet light takes over. Your eye is already handicapped when it comes to seeing the blue/violet spectrum, and if your scope is cutting too much of it out, soon you won’t be seeing anything. The Xtended Twilight Lens System places extra emphasis on matching coatings to glass indices to achieve the best possible transmission of the blue/violet spectrum, without sacrificing the color balanced light transmission across the visual spectrum of the Index Matched Lens System. When we combine that with superior computer-generated optical design, lead-free lenses of unsurpassed clarity and quality, and 100 years of manufacturing excellence, you have a scope that gives you the details of low-light scenes in greater definition and luminance than any other scope in the world.

Looks like an advanced Index Matched to me.

With all the new descriptions they have for lense coatings it's enough to give a guy a headache. I still would like to know what Total Light Throughput means.

I believe the the new vx-3 line will be better than the existing line, but to think that it will be equal to the vx-7 line is alittle optimistic.

It is a little optimistic, but based of the facts of what is in the scope I would say it is not to far of a stretch. All we can do is look at the facts.

Absalutely, I never had a problem with the existing vx3 line, now it should be better.  I'm wondereing if were going to see more aggressive pricing on the vx7 line?

Maybe I should "test drive" one, and if it passes muster, there could be some kinda ceremony: another non-Leupy shooter buys Leupold!

The 3X erector is no big deal, the pop-up turrets, though cool, aren't worth the extra $700.  This might be a Leupold worth what it costs - and that would be a pleasant experience.

Chris, send me a 3.5-10x40 and we'll see if it is worth my hard-earned dollars.

CFII, what is the total elevation difference between the 3X and 4X erectors? Stated a different way, How many UPs do you loose going to a 4X from the 3X?

edited: and what do you gain from the 4x over the 3X.

The guy I spoke with at Leupold about this said the VX3 4.5-14 has more adjustment then the 3.5-14 VX7. As for how much he wasn't sure about that. I would assume it would be less than 10 Clicks difference. This VX3 is also 30mm maintube. If you go to any of the 1" tube VX3's the VX7's will have more adjustment of course being 30mm tubes. With a 4X zoom you get a little wider power range over the the 3X Zoom.
