Does anyone have an opinion on the "slim" barrel of the Remington 700 Mountain LSS.  Will it shoot as well as the standard barrel and will the slimness of it impact how fast it heats up?  Kind of looking for real world experience.  I found a Mountain LSS in .260 that I'm considering but I'm not sure about that slim barrel.  Also, does anyone have a older catalog that lists the .260 and could tell me what the rate of twist is on this gun?  Thanks.

My KS Mountain Rifle has the light contour barrel and shoots 1/2" with SGK's in 7mm Mag. I don't shoot it like my service rifles or heavy barreled varmint 700's and don't worry about heating.
My M7 .260 is 1/9". It shoots the same as the KS and has a light contour barrel, also.

tahqua, what is a KS Mountain Rifle?  Is that a Rem?  Do you know if the 700 Mountain and the Model 7 use the same exact barrel - except for the length?

It is a Custom Shop rifle. They have different contours than standard factory offerings.

Sorry about the vagueness, Tip. The KS is a Kevlar stocked Mountain Rifle from the Remington Custom Shop. The tapers are different between the two rifles. The 7 Mag is 24" and the .260 is 20". They are both light weight contours, though.

Hey Doug, have you seen what they get for Custom Shop rifles these days? Man their prices went through the roof.

The list prices are very high, some over $3,000.00 but the street prices seam to fall in the $2,000.00 - 2,500.00 price range.

I had a .270 mountain DM (not the LSS- laminated stainless steel) awhile ago that was a good shooter with factory loads (1" - 1 1/4" 3 shot groups).  Just bought another in .30-06 that I haven't tried out yet but I expect it to be good too.  No doubt the barrel heats up quicker, and she might be a little more finicky on what shoots good through it, but I would say the light contour is a non factor in hunting situations for accuracy.  I know they sure point and feel good when you shoulder em for me anyway.

I was a little taken back by some of the MSRP's. They do show up for much better prices at the larger retailers in Michigan and online.
I have been quite happy with the Remington Custom Shop and will be getting more, for sure.

Well, I picked up a Rem Mountain LSS in .260!   I will post some pics as soon as I get it.  Its coming from VT, so not sure how long that will take.   Now I get to decide what I want to put on top of it.  I could put the Kahles CL 2-7X36 that I just got for my kids rifle and buy him something different.  I might get him a Conquest 3-9X40 with its 4" of eye relief and that way both my son's would have the same scope - no complaining there!  Otherwise I might get one of the those Swaro 3-9X36 for me and let him have the CL.  Since deer season just ended, not in a big hurry, so have some time to save up a bit.

Pyro, might have to just set something up so you can learn me's some reloading since there doesn't seem to be many factory loads for the .260!
take em!

That's a very nice rifle and I really like the caliber. My next rifle will probably be a 260 or 7mm-08.

picked up my rifle today...... it needs a good cleaning!  Was a little disappointed that it was so dirty, but I think it'll clean up nice.  It doesn't have the new "SuperCell Recoil Pad" that came on my son's CDL, so I will try and find one that fits tomorrow.  Hopefully they didn't change the dimentions of the stock and I'll be able to screw one on!

Cain't wait to shoot it!  Now I have to find some ammo.
take em!

Re the recoil pad, I found one online at Walmart that was cheaper than eBay.

The gun cleaned up beautifully...... the barrel is very bright and shinny, looks brand new!  Has anyone tried to change the recoil pad on a Mountain LSS?  I got the screws out, but the old pad must be clued to the stock!  Talked to Remington this morning and they don't make the new "SuperCell" pad for this old of a stock - it's a 2003.  Supposedly they make the older R3 pad for it, but I want the SuperCell.  Will try to get the old solid pad off and see how close it comes to my son's CDL and might just put that on if its close enough!

It apprears that I will need to get the trigger worked on, pretty heavy pull.  It came with Luepold/Redfield type mounts and rings, but I think I will go with the Warne's that I've been having good luck with.  Just to get an idea of what it looks like and feels like, went ahead and temp. mounted the Kahles 2-7X36 and I think its going to work great.  That means I'll probably have to get my oldest Son a Conquest for his BAR!
take em!

Skinny barrels will always heat up faster than heavier contours, but it's really a non-issue on a big game hunting rifle, other than with regards to issues with balance or when doing extended shooting at the range, where you have to let the barrel cool more.  It's usually a little easier to steady a rifle with a heavier barrel, but again, most of the time, at most normal shot distances, a light barrel isn't a hindrance.  Quite the contrary, I think a lighter, handier rifle is a pleasure to use, especially in the thick stuff or when you're hoofing it a bunch.  I really like the 700 LSS.  It's a nice looking rifle, and your Kahles 2-7X36 is a perfect match for it!Thunbs Up
