With our season closed untill April 2009, I have to find something else to "hunt". Thank heavens for our crayfish season which runs from Mid Nov to Mid April. keeps a boy out of trouble. Well enjoy the shots of the kelp beds taken at Cape Point, the most South Western tip of the African continent. Further south is just great white sharks and a lot of ice! The water has been rather warm for the Atlantic this time of the year at around 68 F instead of the usual 50.
We are only permitted a bag limit of 4 per day. We dive in the kelp beds. The one picture shows a crayfish factory off Kommetjie, Cape Town. I live near this factory, about 5 miles down the coast.
P.S. Chris, I tried to take pics of the crays in their natural habitat, but only bubbles came out of the camera, so sorry boss!

The minimum size we are allowed to catch is a shell size of 3 inches(without measuring the tail). So I guess that makes them about 8 inches long. The ones I catch are about 4 to 5 inches + on the shell. Normally two make for a good meal, with a bit of brown rice and a salad.
They can grow to a shell size of about 7 inches.

These are way bigger then any prawn. The 3 inches is just the head part. With the tail they are 7 inches plus and a lot wider then prawns.

Hey BigDaddy, it is not all that easy here in Africa. One has to fight off marauding lions to get to the beach. The water is not safe either, as they are patrolled by Great White Sharks the size of submarines!
I would also love to send you some crayfish, but since the 9/11 attacks they have been classified as a danger to our national security, I think under the same codes as the USA uses for scopes and other gunparts. So we are not permitted to ship them to a non RSA residents.
