Hey, All.

I've been loading 140gr Gamekings in my 270 WSM with good success.  However, like many of us I'm always looking to do better.  I know that Berger is making VLD's in .277 now (even though my supplier doesn't have them yet!) and was wondering if anybody had experience/info with these in a short mag.

Things like best powder choices (to keep from buying a dozen different kinds of powder), charge weights, primer choice, etc would be a big help.  I heard they'll be coming out with a manual in the Spring, but I'd like to get a leg up on it.

btw, I'll probably go with the 150 grain bullets and hope they fit in the detachable mag in my Tikka!

the only issue i can see with your combo you want to try is that the 150gr bullet will probably be pretty long and may take up some powder space

pyro,

The only reason I was thinking about the 150 was for the sustained energy downrange.  Do you have any idea about how much shorter the 140 would be?  What would you do in my case?......beside getting rid of the .270 cal Big Grin

i would email berger for exact oal of there bullets, but i do know that with barnes tsx bullets compared to say sierra game kings, there is a big difference in oal, i shoot a 120gr 6.5mm tsx in one of my rifles and its almost as long as the 140gr 6.5mm sierra game king i shoot in another rifle, and im pretty sure that if i were to load the 130gr tsx in that 6.5mm bullet it would be longer than the 140gr sierra. so like i say i would check with them this is supposedly there email: bergerltd@aol.com

PYRO,

I noticed that H1000 and Retumbo show a fill rate of over 100%.  Does that mean these are compressed powder charges?  Wouldn't they give me less room for seating?  I noticed the 4350 only takes up 90.7%....would this give me the most room?

Or, have you just had better luck with Retumbo and H1000.

btw, I use H1000 in a 7mm STW and shoot .210 to .305 @ 100yds consistently, so I know it's good stuff...at least for that rifle.

my .264 uses h-1000 as well and it shoots nice little groups, usually the target guys will look at density numbers to accomplish accuracy, and i have found some combos over that 100% shoot very well. i would work my way up to those.

...............When I called Berger last week and talked with them, I was concerned about the COAL and how it relates to my magazine`s length. I shoot a 300 WSM w/o the detachable magazine.

For hunting, I`m interested in trying the VLD "hunting" bullets. But I also wish to be able to cycle the bolt effectively for hunting.

Even though in most cases, the best accuracy will come by seating bullets to the lands or 5/1000ths into the lands, according to Berger, the recomended max distance from the lands is 15/1000ths, then working closer until the bullets are 5/1000ths into the lands. Somewhere between that 20/1000ths variable, will come the best sweet spot or most the accurate loading depending on the rifle.

For your Tikka, the question will be your magazine`s length vs how close to the lands you can go with the Berger bullets and achieve the best accuracy. If your magazine`s length will not allow you to at least get to within 15/1000ths of the lands, accuracy may be an issue with the Bergers.

As far as powders are concerned, I`m still waiting on some of that new Rel 17, which is suppose to offer the best velocity for the short mags while maintaining very good accuracy.

Does that 100%+ mean I'd be compressing powder?  Are the ones that use up more of the case typically the best place to start for accuracy?

yes in most cases you would be compressed loads, some powders are just naturally very dense, and generally its the real slow magnum stuff that does that.  as a rule, supposedly when you have a case full you get more consistant burn which is suppose to help accuracy, it doesnt always work that way though.

..........Yeah there is at.........http://www.6mmbr.com/reloder17.html..........

Scroll down!.......................Nobody out here has it yet either.

But get this!.....A poster over at "24hourcampfire" tried some 17 in his 300 RSAUM. Went from 3000 fps using 4350 to 3150 fps using 62 grains of Rel 17 out of a 24" barrel with a 180 grain bullet. The powders he was using previously were his max loads and yet, look at the increase he got with the 17.......Wow!........5% overall going from 3000 to 3150.

If ya go over to the campfire site, look under "reloading"

Ok.  I'll give the H1000 a shot since I already have some.  I am interested to see how the RE 17 works out though.
