I read a rule of thumb that you should spend as much on optics as you do on the rifle. I have a SS 10x42 which I am happy with but what would be the next logical upgrade for a custom AR15 for long range varmint? How much do you have to spend to get a noticeable difference in a fixed scope? I just can't see myself spending $1500 on a piece of glass. (no offense to those who do) I wish I had that kind of money.

You will have to spend considerably more money to get better than the SS. How much would you consider spending, I'll see what I come up with.

When I started reading the internet about guns in 1996 there was no WWW, but there were smart guys that told me to stop fooling with cheap scopes and buy Leupold.
I thought they cost too much.

I have since learned to buy expensive:
scopes
barrels
bullets
brass
dies
press
sling
range finder
shoes
tires
hunting clothes
lathes
mills
welders
boats
ect

You can buy expensive or buy smart its up to you.  And just because something is expensive does not mean it's the best or even good.  If I were upgrading from a SS and had the cash for it I would skip over Leupold and go with an IOR tactical.  For less money but still definitely an upgrade I would look at the Bushnell Elite 4200 tactical scope.  I do like the 10x Leupold mk4 though.
I'm just another internet blowhard with too much time on my hands for the past couple weeks so take my comments with a grain of salt
