Hello there!

First time on this forum although a member of many.

I have been looking for some more information on these, what their exact use were, age etc.

What I do know is they are German and were taken from a carrier that was eventually sunk.

Any information or advice would be most gratefully received!

Heya, just spent a good few hours searching on the net and have found that they (probably) are:
BLC (Carl Zeiss - militrabteilung - jena) (germany ofc)
Model D.F. 8x60 Porro II, when mounted on ships were used for airplane spotting.

Although I have been completely unsuccessful in finding any information about their use when supplied with the box -the metal wedges allow them to be mounted to the top of the box giving it an integral stand I guess. (it says 'mit stativausfsatz' on the side which I translated to 'With adapter to stand' but it's been a while since I last did german!

The stand has a 360 degree numerical radial markings while the tilt also seems to have some sort of measure also.

Only after I posted did I really have a good look at it in good light and found some very faded text on the box.

That is the most well built binoculars of all time.
They are great opticswise and they are very nice to use.
The FOV is totally unmatched by ANY make and model today.
Those 8x60 was as far as I know only used by the Germans and Swedish (because we had extensive trading with germany during this time.)
The 8x60 was probably (my guess) dealt with as a military secret and also very expensive.

Those binoculars was used both as handhelds and as mounted binoculars.

The Cradle was used for measuring out where other ships or items out in the sea was.
You can see a few more 8x60 binoculars on my webpage, please look at both the swedish and German section.

DF stands for Doppfelfernrohr (duoble scope) and Porro ll stands for the optical construction, that is actually still used today in some of the most expensive observationbinoculars today.

Hmm, well although your offer is very generous I think I'll be hanging on to them for now :)

Is there any sort of guidelines as to how to care for a set such as these, can/should I clean them?

Would it detract from their potential value if I have them looked at by an optical specialist (if you look closely at the left lens there is all I can describe as what looks like a snowflake pattern on the inside - I assume this is why the left one is slightly blurred.  There is a very very small 'snowflake' on the inside of the right one but it does not seem to be affecting their use).  Is these a known issue with binoculars? Should I have them fixed?

TIA! :D

Are you a collector? Is that piece sentimentally valuable to you? If the answer is "no", sell them. If the answer is "yes", those snowflakes are most likely fungus, which is difficult to clean and requires dissasembly of the instrument. Are you wiling to pay good money to have them cleaned?

Thank you very much for that source - made for very interesting reading, am still yet to find another set on the web with the hefty clamp and stand built into the box, I'd really like to know of their full intended use. - Going to set my grandfather on the case later today!

Merry xmas everyone!

Thanks for that technika!  Don't suppose you have some contact details for him? All I seem to be able to find is the odd reference to him, does he run a repair shop?

Quite a bit of discussion on the 8x60 here.  My reading seems to indicate these were primarily U-Boat issued.  You see these on internet auction for almost always north of $5,000.  Those should be worth quite a bit more than that.  They seem to be in a complete as issue set, and are in much better shape than some I've seen go for.
