At the risk of totally alienating pyro  Devil Sword, I will postulate the following:

A friend and I were riding around on the high rack this last weekend and he asked for my opinion on what gun he should buy for deer and hog hunting.  He is not a gun nut and only has a 243.  We went through the calibers like so:

243 - PROBLEM - too small for all but marginal shots, some of our hogs get to 300 pounds and deer to 200 pounds and shots to 400 yards
25-06 - MINOR PROBLEM - shoots bullets a little too small for the above mentioned game
257 Roberts - MINOR PROBLEM - lack of plentiful and adequate factory loads, still shoots bullets too small and not a long range shooter
260 rem - MINOR PROBLEM - lack of plentiful factory loads, not quite enough horsepower
6.5 rem mag - PROBLEM - lack of plentiful and adequate factory loads
6.5x284 - PROBLEM - no factory ammo
6.5-06 - PROBLEM - no factory ammo
270 - NO PROBLEMS - plenty of good factory ammo, shoots flat, hard hitting, 140 & 150 grain bullets for game right up to and including Elk
280 - MINOR PROBLEM - lack of plentiful and adequate factory ammo, other than that a fine round
7 mag - MINOR PROBLEM - a little too much muzzle blast and recoil
308 - MINOR PROBLEM - a little underpowered for the size of a decent sectional density bullet
30-06 - MINOR PROBLEM - a little too much recoil and not a flat shooter, a little underpowered
300 win mag - MINOR PROBLEM - too much recoil, other than that what I told him I would recommend it if he had Elk in the future
338 win mag - PROBLEM - way too much recoil especially shooting the weight bullets this caliber was made for

So I told him he should get a 270 because it is the only caliber that has NO PROBLEMS!

Generally speaking when asked this question, the first thing I ask is if they are going Elk hunting.  If the answer is yes, then I recommend a 300 win mag and if the answer is no, I recommend the 270.

I think if someone had one of each, .270 and a .300, he or she would have all the tools ever needed to hunt anything in N.A.

25-06 is not to small for either of those animals, my father in law has killed many elk with the 25-06 with a 115gr bullets, so i disagree with that one. i think the 7-08 is missing from your list. as is the .338fed. the 7mm mag has to much recoil??? with a 150gr bullet it wont kick any more than a 30-06 with a 180gr bullet, i wont argue your points on the .270 because they are politically correct for my liking, eventhough i still hate it. i do somewhat disagree with your thoughts on the .280 though, go look at what nosler has to offer with there new line of factory ammo, they are even doing 6.5rem mag stuff and not just in one bullet either. if the .308 is underpowered so is the .30-06 they arent very far apart ballistically when firing the same weight of bullets and you have less recoil with the .308.

I did leave out the 7-08.  IMO it is marginal but a good choice.  Not as flat a shooter as the 270.

I guess I would put the 7-08 as a MINOR PROBLEM with shooting at the longer ranges past 300 yards where I do not feel the 270 has a deficit.  I would put the 7-08 on the lower side of the 270 and the 280 on the upper side with the 270 the top of the pyramid.

I have heard others complain about the 7 mag and the recoil and muzzle blast.  It doesn't bother me but my 300 win mag and 338 RUM are favorites of mine.  Big Grin

BTW, I do not presently own a 270.

Another analogy while we're talking about it.  Most guys understand trucks better than guns so:

243, 257 Bob - like an S10 or Ford ranger
25-06 - extended cab Ford Ranger with a BIG 6 cylinder
260 - Dodge Dakota, Chevy Colorado
264 win mag - 4 door Dodge truck with a Hemi engine
6.5 rem mag, 6.5-06, 6.5x284, 270, 280 - Chevy 1500 4 door, Ford 150 4 door
270 Wtby - Dodge heavy half with a Hemi
7-08 - Chevy 1500 with a 6 cylinder engine
7 mag - 3/4 ton with a V-8 gas engine
30-06 - 3/4 ton with a 6 cylinder
300 win mag, 338 win mag, 300 Wtby - 3/4 ton 4 door with a diesel
338 RUM, 340 Wtby - 1 ton dually

Then I ask them how big a trailer they want to haul.

The whitetail I took with a 140 grain Core-Lokt was impressive. The front shoulder was smashed and the bullet went completely through. It took the heart, a lung and part of the liver before exiting behind the off ribs. I was impressed.
I don't know about it for hogs, though. I own several of the calibers on the list and anything from .270 on up should certainly be good for all around use on most game.
The 6.5 SD's have really caught my attention as of late, though. The 25's have fans, too. Once again I don't know squat about pigs, though. Four legged that is....

i reload so most of this factory ammo or lack of stuff really doesnt apply to me, so i prefer some of those odd balls, 6.5rem .264win .257wby .280rem 7-08 .260 etc. the 6.5bullets are lightening on whitetail ive only ever seen a deer fall that fast once in my life and that was a 30yd shot with a 180gr bullet from a .300wsm.

Although I've got rifles chambered in some of the rds that are listed as having minor problems, problems, plus a .270 Win,sakomato,I've got to say I honestly believe you've nailed it.

One more for the argument, every thing from the 257-bob up is adequate for the application mentioned.I feel you are putting to much technical in front of real world performance,.I have seen what all of this listed calibers can and will do.and they do it well. thanx for reading.

7mm, that's what I use exclusively for hunting but I've been trying to decide on a good match for a couple of years now.

.270 and .300 are a great match.

7mm and (that's my dilemma) Not sure If I want to go up or down.  .300win and .270 are too close.

Pyro, your RIGHT. I had one about 30yrs ago(Rem M700 Classic w/an unbelievable pc of wood on it) but I got the .300 bug and just couldn't afford to buy one without trading or selling the 7mm. What I based my reply to sakomato on was a theoretical situation. If I were to lend one of my rifles to someone for the type of hunting sakomato described, and didn't know that persons shooting experience, which one would it be. Of the cartridges he mentioned,I've got rifles chambered in .243,.25-06,.270 Win,.308,.30-06,and a .300.  I picked the .270 because over the past 30yrs of people coming to shoot at my range, that is the largest caliber cartridge I've seen shot that I don't know of anyone not just being able to handle but totally comfortable with.  I've said on the OT before that the .25-06 is my favorite rd but honestly can't tell the difference in shootability between it and the .270 Win and the .270 handles heavier bullets so........  I will say this though,if I knew back 30yrs ago what I know now I'd still have that 7mm and that would be it.

thats understandable and i will agree with you, what i like about the 7mm is the wide range of bullet weights it shoots.
