    Posted: December/15/2008 at 20:40

Was planning to send a Remington 700 CDL SF in 270 to Hill Country for their accurizing service. Still might but also considering one of their semi-custom Remington rifles. 1800 bucks for accurized 700 in a McMillan stock. Considering 7mm rem or 300 Win. Not sure if need the 270 if buy a 7mm. I am a new hunter not a collector or much of a range guy. Any one have experience with the Hill Country semi-custom rifles? Hill Country folks have been very nice and helpful on the phone. Would you loose the 270 if bought 7mm or 300win and should I expect the Hill Country Remington to be a big improvement over a factory rifle? I will hunt mostly whitetail in the SE but kinda have the bug to go out west for mule deer.

Thanks

if you buy a magnum, there is no reason to keep the .270, the 7mm is all the rifle you need for pretty much any animal in north america and quite a few in africa as well, you get a lot more weights of bullets to choose from than you would with the .270, and i wouldnt recommend a .300mag to a person just starting to shoot, nothing can turn a person off of shooting than recoil. the 7mm is pretty nice to shoot, even with the 175gr bullet, which i doubt you will ever use, more than likely you will shoot a 150gr or 160gr bullet, you may even use the 140gr stuff. while i have no experience with the hill country gang, they are a place that does a lot of accurizing to a lot of rifles and i suspect that they do know what they are doing. with the 7mm you can go out west with that rifle and have plenty of snort to take mulies in the deserts of wyoming at 400yds, not saying it cant be done with the .270, but the 7mm will have more behind it out there.

Well, I like a 270 Win.  I always had a 270 in the closet ( sometimes two ) and I still had a 7mm Rem Mag and a 300 Win Mag...and a 30/06, too.  I wound up getting rid of the 7 Mag ( for not much reason other than I wanted to trade the gun store for an old 300 Savage..)

Nothing wrong with having calibers that are kinda close together.  Get the 270 fixed up first and see how you like the work.  From the photos I have seen I would order from Hill Country without a second thought.

I shot a big bodied Nebraska whitetail with a 140 gr. accubond and was thrilled. Easy 100 yd shot in the heart lung area. Passed on some mule deer at 300 both for rack size and because was afraid of the shot with the 270. I am sure a well placed vital area shot would have been fine but wonder about a less perfect shot. This is where the magnum idea came from.

im sorry but nobody buys a 7mag to shoot 140gr bullets through it, thats like buying a 300 mag to shoot 125gr bullets. the .270 cant compete with the 7mag, the .280rem however can, and the .280AI really gives the 7mm a run.

3 grand for another rifle scope combo is a big pill to swallow for me at the moment. Could also get the domestic veto. Might sell the 270 scope and all and get a 7mm or just get the 270 fixed up. Not sure how much would recover on the 270  cdl sf with conquest 3x9 50 mm. Likely would take bigger beating if spent another 850 on stock and accurizing and then sold it. Probably only 1200.00 into the 270 at the moment. Fun to have choices though for the off season. Hoped to do this for Xmas but not looking real likely. Thanks for the ideas.

i dislike the .270, i was born and raised in the mountains of wyoming, and i saw plenty of long range shooting growing up there, and most of the locals used 7mms or 300s of some sort, be it win or wby. if i have any and i mean any consideration of going to wyoming, montana colorado or idaho to hunt mulies or elk, i want a magnum. although i will admit the first time i stepped on the mountain after elk i was carrying a pre64 m70 in a .257roberts shooting those clunky looking 117gr bullets out of that anemic excuse for a case, thank god i didnt see an elk that year. after that i went to a 30-06 for a year then i bought a .300win. the .25-06 is probably the bottom limit of acceptable elk cartridges for me, and i wouldnt advise any shots with that over 200yds on an elk.

my .264 is a cdl sf, sweet looking riflei noticed that hill country doesnt guarantee accuracy improvements with the .223 & .243 wssm or the .264 win, i can see why, my .264 has been a fussy mofo to handload for.

Hill Country makes excellent rifles, but they are not cheap. Unless you plan on some long shots, the 7 mag is not going to give you any big advantage on whitetails or mulies for that matter. If you already own the 270 CDL, look around for a McMillan stock in either a Classic, Sporter or a Mountain Rifle design. It is a simple drop in install and even McMillan states that it is not necessary to bed their stocks. Before going the Hill Country route, have the trigger adjusted to around 3 lbs and see how she shoots. You might be surprised and save yourself some loot in the process.

My Colorado based hunting partner this year used a 300 ultra mag. He did not seem concerned about any shot up to about 450. Whether or not this was good logic is probably up for debate. I know wind is an issue with any caliber. Does a high energy round give you much more room for error? I would think it would give some. Or for imperfect angle shots (not broadside).

a heavier bullet does more than likely he was shooting a 180gr bullet out of that howitzer, and no he really didnt need to worry about the wind its the weight not the energy, of couse bullets with higher b.c tend to do better with not only flatness over a long range but also with drift. if you compared the drift in the .270 to the 7mm the 150gr .277 would probably be about the same as a 150gr 7mm and a 160gr 7mm would be higher, which is why i say if you shoot a 7mm use a 160gr bullet.
