Not sure what the term is for getting clocked by a scope. My wife works in the medical coding field and has seen several cases since Thanksgiving of people going to the ER with a gash above their eyebrow. One was between the eyes. Seems like something you would figure out before you shot at game. Just something to keep in mind when in the field. A long way from anywhere is not the place to need stitches unless yer Rambo.

It's called Weatherby Eye. It comes from people that stock crawl. improperly mounted scopes or scopes with to short an eye relief.

Or when your stupid butler creek cap that you just got and installed at the beginning of your stalk while in the dark takes away 3/4 of an inch of eye relief and you pull up on an elk with a 45-70 and after you shoot your eye ball starts to sting because something is running into it and you feel all this warm liquid running down your face in the cold air. |

I got a nice little scar this season from that little red tab that
flips open the cap. LOL I am right eyed, but it is right above the
inside corner of my left eye. I didn't even feel it until I felt the
blood, it was raining so I was already wet, but I could feel the warmth and sting in my eyeball. It was pretty funny.

OR! As I did 33 years ago, you can mistakingly over load IMR 4350 by 6 grains for a 300 Win using 180 gr bullets. Blood all over!........It certainly helps to read and stay focused on the same line??? 6 grains over was a charge for a slower burner, NOT 4350...........................

Wow! That could have been a lot worse than it was. I hope whatever you hit was dead afterwards.

I earned one by shooting a buck with my muzzleloader from an ackward position from my left shoulder. (I am right-handed.) A small amount of blood and no stitches. Glasses needed some professional attention!

I got one years ago by shooting down hill from a prone position and not holding the gun with my left hand. Recoil had to go somewhere and UP offered the least amount of resistance. I didn't need stitches, but every time I leaned over during the gutting process, blood pumped out like a gusher!
Funny thing happened that year also, we were hunting with a new guy and he got one while shooting right handed and the dumb ass got another one while shooting left handed, so he had a X scar on his forhead! We laughed for a week on that one!

If I was shooting Magnums from, like, 300 Weatherby on up, I would want 4 inches of eye relief. Otherwise 3.5" is good enough for me....but you can't be holding the rifle incorrectly. If you're holding it wrong--or being in a hurry-- or you've got your face where it ain't supposed to be, the scope ( or your thumb..) or something (!) can come back and hit you no matter how much eye relief you've got!

......or when you forget to snug the rings properly. First shot, scope slides back ever-so-slightly. Second shot, six stitches between the eyes! My Dad was real proud....

In South Africa we call it the Half Moon, with an elite club- the Half Moon Club.
When some-one gets whacked and he is wiping the blood off his face we all say "Welcome to the Half Moon club"
I have not yet joined it!
I made a royal stuff up some years ago by letting a 10 year old shoot with my 30-06. He clamped the stock under his arm, and before I could stop him he pulled the trigger. Scope whacked him hard, had to take him to the hospital for stitches. I was not popular at home or with his mother!

It also reminds me of the "Star Wars Secret Soc". We have a high alcohol drink called Sambuca. The trick was to pour it into a shot glass (small glass), then set the top alight. One then have to put your hand over the top, which douses the flame and down it in one go. Now the trick is to do this quickly. If you dilly dally the rim of the glass heats up and as you put your hand over it it burns a circle. To make matters worse, the vacuum created by the cooling flame sucks the glass to your hands. Quite a few guys have a permanent circle branded into their palm, hence the "secret soc".
