you can hunt them here in montana. I think they have a minimum caliber and bullet weight. And I believe you have to demonstrate a 2" group at 100 yards before you can go out. Better take lots of friends. That is a big animal to gut out. And remember not to aim too high in the shoulder. It is kinda deceiving where the vitals are. The hump makes it weird so it looks like you have to aim really low, but that is where the vitals are. Better have a big freezer too. That is a lot of meat, but is very good eating.

There is a reason why the Indians hunted them in hunting parties. A ton of work is required to butcher them, and that much meat would feed a whole village.
I do agree Good Eatin'!!!!!!! |

There is an author in Utah named Lee Nelson that killed one from horseback with a primitive bow and arrow. Just to see what it was like for his books.

thats wild! wonder how you would practice something like that. i highly doubt he just jumped on a horse and just rode up to a buffalo and shot it with a long bow like that.

I don't know, but that sure would have been cool to see.
Every summer when he was younger he used to take people on week long trail rides out on the east desert at robbers roost and places butch cassidey and others used to live and ride. If I would have been 15 years older I probably would have signed up and went with him. Would have been pretty cool. Course I have been to all those places on my own now but the stories and history he would have shared would have been the best part. |

They like to stomp things and butt heads. They turn faster than you think. I used to eat lunch watching them. I talked to the guy who raised them. They take a lot more pain than your normal cow. Figure your Buffalo cow is about the size of a good cattle bull. Her head is a lot tougher. They will watch you like a deer and are every bit as wary, but will want to stomp your ass rather than run away.

On my future bison hunts, I will use a guide w/backup. They can be spooked very easily and are sometimes difficult to stalk. They can also charge and are very quick.
I heard on Hunting TV or read somewhere, that the American buffalo has killed or injured more hunters than the African caped buffalo? Yes? No? Maybe so?
Either way, my .375 will be my medicine of choice for these guys!

I killed one with a bow in a high fence deal.........was way harder than I thought . They were very skiddish, a lot faster than I expected, and tough !! Took me several hours to stalk within bow range in some intensely cold weather(after getting busted a couple of times).
I put an arrow right through the heart and lungs and it took about 90 seconds to go down !! Guide said it was the fastest archery kill he'd ever seen..........and I was thinking it was unbelievable that he was staggering around for that long !
Gutting and skinning him took most of a whole day with two of us.............hard work!! But I really enjoyed it !! Doubt I would do it again.......but it was fun to do one time !!

Never hunted them, but bought one from a farm once to eat, and they let me kill it. A 25-06 right in the head works pretty well. Best part is, I didn't have to gut it, or do any work after the shot. Shake the mans hand, and get in the truck. Go pick up my meat when they were done.

Makes you think how the Indians did it. How many did they wound? How many arrows to take one down etc?
