Considering putting a Bushnell 4200 1.5-4X24 on a Ruger Ranch Rifle .223. Wondering if anyone has done this and would offer comments / advice.
Thanks in advance...John

sounds like a sweet setup for carrying around in the gun rack of a pickup for dispatching coyotes!

That is my intention. I bought the ruger ranch years ago and have not used it at all. Thought I'd retire the .22 and set the rugher up for an eliminator of the ever growing coyote population.
I'm just not sure if I'll have sufficient eye relief and possible other hidden issues.
Hoping someone has experience with the set-up I'm trying to achieve. Thanks...John

the loopie will certainly give you better eye relief, cost more too. thats the one gripe i have with the 4200

Guys, pretty sure the 4200 eye relief will not be an issue on a .223 and like pyro says a fair bit less expensive too.

This particular 4200 weighs 15 oz. The 1.5-5x20 VX3`s are almost 37% lighter @ only 9.5 oz. 5.5 oz may not seem like alot, but when you do alot of hiking, climbing, shouldering and shooting over periods of time, there is a noticeable difference. You also have more reticle choices to choose from the the VX3`s.
I don`t have a 223 Ruger Ranch, but I rotate this Leupy between two somewhat higher,,,, recoiling rifles. Although you gain more eye relief with the VX3, in your case with the 223, it`s not an issue. As a former 4200 owner, the glass quality between the two will be hardly noticeable if at all.
Also, no one can beat Leupold`s customer service.

It seems confusing reading the whole thread as to which scope costs more, so, per SWFA pricing:
1.5-4X24mm Bushnell 4200 $4XX
1.5-5X20mm VXIII $3XX

maybe take advantage of the reduced price of the loopies eventhoug they dont have rainguard, they do still make a nice scope. i dont like the lack of a true fast focus though.

That`s right!.............The non illuminated 1.5x5 VX3`s are less $$$,, than this illuminated 4200!

For coyote, especially the low light they travel in, the larger objective on the Bushy would be an advantage. If you can dial down the illumination intensity enough, I would take the 4200 anytime.
I have a 1.5-5 Leupy and it is not a low light scope by any means. It is an outstanding scope. It is not a predator scope, though. I have several predator guns and none of them wear a straight tubed 1" scope with a 20mm objective. They just don't cut it in low light. Nor, for taking long shots at doggies. |

not that im aware of, they require an "inspection" before they will issue a brand new scope, if they can fix it they will. sightron just gives you a new one on the spot.

Thanks for all the replies fellows. Yes the 4200 has the illuminated rectile and it is new in box. I can buy it for $370.00 delivered to my front door. Tried to buy an illuminated Lupy ( $459.00 ) on the sample list but the guys couldn't find it and figured it was sold. I like the illumination dot...seems to do well with my eyesight. Thanks for all the help...John

You`ll be happy with that 4200!..........I`m almost never doing any real low lite hunting myself, so an illuminated reticle for me, is something not needed. But if its better for your eye sight, then the 4200 is a better deal for you than the Leupold.
