I own both a nikon monarch and a 4200 and i hunt with both occasionally in really bad weather because here in the tropics, our "real pure wild bush pigs" only go out in the open either at night or during or immediately after heavy windless downpours. The 4200 still fogs up but i would have to say that it's easier to manage and avoid than the nikon without a rainguard. Considering they are similar in price, the rainguard feature is a very strong selling point for the elite series over similar spec scopes. Only thing holding it back is the size. Big Grin

they work with rain but not so well with snow, i found this out with my 4200 elite a few weeks ago, but i kinda set the scope up for failure, i use a hand warming muff with heat factory "body size" warmer packets and i placed the scope under the muff so it rested on top of my legs apparently it was warm there i pulled the scope up to see what would happen and she fogged right now. with the snow ive found its fine to let the snow hit the lens if its cold enough it wont melt all you have to do is lightly blow it out with a quick breath and its fine. i can say the same about my nikons too though but i dont generally get to hunt in the rain so i cant comment on that aspect, if the snow melts on the lens i can tell you that the rain guard works very well and even if you leave the water droplets on the lens you wont see them while looking through the scope, rainguard kicks serious butt, its one of the best parts about the 4200 scope, i only wish that the eye relief was a little better on them. but they are nice scopes for the money.

As far as Rainguard is concerned, Bushnell would like to have you believe that any moisture is afraid of Rainguard and runs for cover. It does help, but the reason I like 4200's goes far beyond the Rainguard feature.

I agree with the others.

Rainguard is a GREAT option and does help a TON, but you will still have minor fog when it's really bad out.

The opener of Antelope rifle season coincided with a blizzard here in Montana this year and Rainguard worked very well under those conditions. I only noticed some fogging after getting back into a warmer truck. Otherwise, no problems.Excellent

I have several 4200's and 3200's and never an issue ( knock on wood) . I like the rainguard...Three years back , my father in law and I were hunting during a snow shower ,and headed back from morning stand with a buddy in his truck..Well, as luck would have it, we all literally spotted the same buck and the same time in an adjacent field. My father in law and I exited out his side door and lined up on the deer at the same time.. He couldn't shoot cause his Weatherby's scope ( Weatherby branded model)  was still fogged up from going from the warm truck to the 20 degree outdoors.. That buck is hanging in my basement thanks to rainguard. He wasn't thrilled, but another moment later and the 8 point would have split.

The Rainguard works I have both 4200 & 3200 which have been in rain and snow and able to shoot at deer when the scope was covered in snow.I like the Elite scopes and the new Sightron SII Big Sky which also has a similar coating which prevents fogging.
