COOL! I enjoy looking at those old historic pics, Goddess!
Luckily, we have a readily accessible resource in Ed to give us a first hand account of what life was like way back then!

WOW! Steph do you know if that MG08 Maxim is a live gun?

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Oh so that's what it's called. I was wondering. Not sure if it is or not. Most likely not. Can you tell me a little about that gun?

I knew that it has some kind of power to it. See the foot holder on the bottom legs! The one I see had that as well.

Steph, without going into detail (you can check mike650's link) the Maxim MG08 was invented by Hiram Maxim an American, and was used by the German Army in WWI and II. It was considered a heavy machinegun and used in a fixed position. It fired the 8x57mm Mauser cartridge at a rate of about 500-600 rpm, and is water cooled (note the big water jacket around the barrel) and can be fired for long periods of time. The MG08 is the reason trench warfare started during WWI. The Maxim is considered to be the first successful machinegun. It was used by several countries and in different calibers, and was copied by others. The British Vickers is a copy of the Maxim system, and the MG used by the Brits in WWI and II. I have watched shooters at the KCR MG shoot, shoot these guns all day long stopping only to reload.
