Field of View

There are several features and benefits that the HWS offers, all of which are geared toward enhancing the performance of the operator.  Most of these features assist in lightning fast target acquisition, but field of view directly impacts the operator’s situation awareness.  Field of view is defined as the widest dimension that is visible (as through an optical instrument).  When dealing with non-magnified electronic weapon sights, it is imperative to operate with two eyes open, thus creating the greatest awareness.  The two most common sighting systems offering this shooting ability are EOTech and Aimpoint.  In close quarter situations, both systems offer the user full retention of peripheral vision, although, the HWS is considerably more effective.

Although the Aimpoint offers unlimited field of view, there are many obstructions limiting the operator’s view.  The battery cap, windage/elevation adjustments, mounting rings, and lens covers, as well as the tunnel vision associated with tubed sights, drastically constrict the user’s vision.  On the other hand, the HWS produces a full, unobstructed field of view by locating all user controls flush to the HWS’ streamline housing.  As the operator focuses on the target, the narrow frame of the holographic window blurs out and disappears.  A natural and unobstructed view of the target and the surrounding engagement zone is achieved.

The holographic viewing window of the HWS is rectangular in shape, much like that of a television or computer screen.  The full horizontal field of view is available regardless of where the reticle is positioned within the viewing window.  Comparatively, the viewing window of the Aimpoint and most other red dot sights is invariably circular in shape.  The maximum horizontal field of view is available only when the dot is placed at the center of the window.  With the HWS’ larger viewing aperture, the weapon can be brought up and immediately locked on to the target without first placing the aiming pattern near the center of the viewing window.  Simply put, this aids in greater field of view and even quicker target acquisition.

Field of view is measured two ways.  It is either given in yards at a specified distance, or it is measured in degrees.  For simplicity, we will refer to it in yards.  At a distance of 100 yards and a 2” eye relief, the HWS provides a 35 yard horizontal field of view and over 22.5 yards vertically.  This equates to an area of roughly 790 square yards.  The 16.5 yards both horizontally and vertically that the Aimpoint provides, only offers an area of about 214 square yards, almost 4 times less than the EOTech.  Figure C shows the differences in area between these two optics.  In addition, the field of view advantages of the HWS are even greater when night vision applications arise and the operator must acquire his target with only his dominant eye.    Figure A and B are non-altered photographs of both the EOTech and Aimpoint viewed through a night vision device.  This visually shows the enormous advantage the HWS offers by greatly improving the operator’s awareness and ability to identify multiple threats.

To conclude, the situations our military and law enforcement units face each day are drastically different from the past.  A recent statistic from the Department of Justice claims that more than 50% of shooting situations include multiple threats.  This number must be magnified for our military who are dealing with a very difficult, urban style warfare.  It is imperative that the good guys are afforded equipment that offers the operator not only lightning fast target acquisition, but complete awareness of the situation he is facing.   The solution…EOTech HWS.

See what you’re Missing!

Field-of-View comparison between an Aimpoint Comp and an EOTech HWS as viewed through a Night Vision

The EOTech advantage is clear to see.

The EOTech’s field-of-view (FOV) is nearly 4 times as wide as the Aimpoint Comp M2’s.

Greater FOV means improved situational awareness and faster threat identification.

The HWS offers 10 night vision reticle settings compared to the Aimpoint Comp’s four settings.

*These photographs are NOT altered.  Both Images were taken through an ITT AN/PVS-14 Night Vision Scope mounted 2” behind the optic.  The camera was equal distance from the PVS-14 in both photos.

EOTech is proud to announce the recent purchase of over 3,000 HOLOgraphic Weapon Sights (HWS) by the Marine Corps Systems Command (MARSYSCOM). The sights were purchased under the weapon equirement for the Force Recon Close Quarter Battle Weapon. This is the second contract received

by the USMC in CY04 and will begin delivery in early 2005. This, along with the initial contract award of

over 1,900 units earlier in 2004, greatly increases EOTech's presence within the battle zone.
