I am in the market for a new scope for my model 70 in 7mm mag. I've never had the cash to buy a decent scope, but now I can. I am in the $400-$600 range. I know this price range will limits me to "good" scopes, but I've killed a ton of game with cheap scopes. So this should be like night and day! I'm really interested in Nikons. I really can't find the differences between the Nikon Monarch Gold and the Monarch except the Gold has a 30mm tube. Is it worth the the extra money to go with the bigger tube? I have found a 2.5x10x50 Gold for $575 brand new, not refurbed. I don't know that much about optics, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This price range actually puts you in to pretty good optics. This is kind of a plateau in scopes between "really good" scopes and the "best scopes" A 30mm tube will give a larger adjustment range. This would be nice for dialing in long shots. For most people who don't dial out to very long ranges, it holds no other huge advantage. You will have to buy new rings if you have been using 1" scopes before. I would have a look at samplelist.com to stretch your money further. They have refurbs and display models at great prices, and those who bought there always seem to be very happy. This would allow a great scope at a reasonable price. I'll throw out some more to look at. I don't know how far your shots usually are, but will toss out a few different styles. I usually stick with 44mm and smaller objective to keep the scope low, but to each his own.
These are very nice for the money. Last years model, on sale cheap.
These are very nice too, many reticle selections
I have never seen the Kahles American, but have looked through a Kahles CL and it was amazing. Haven't seen a Swaro American either, but considering the name it would almost have to be good. Wow that was a long post.

Thanks for the info Trigger! I have a cheap Barska 2.5x12x56 now, and let me emphasize cheap! My wife, bless her heart, thought she was doing me a favor when I was complaining that I needed a new scope, bought me this p.o.s. It was okay till I put 5 or 6 rounds through my gun. I think I would like the 50mm bell for some reason. Still would like to know the difference in the Monarch Gold and the Monarch. Same glass, bigger tube? Or are the glass and coatings better? Do you think the Conquest is better? I have to admit, I'm not alot smarter than my wife when it comes to optics. I'm here to learn! Thanks for any additional info!!

I have a Nikon Monarch 2,5-10X 50 ,3 weeks ago,it has the same glass of a Monarch Gold.The difference is 1´or 30mm tube,Trigger 20 has said it woull mark differences between long shots ,only. I v bouhgt a Zeiss Conquest 3,5-10X 44 a week ago. I think a 44 diameter works very similar than 50,but 44 allows mount lower rings.It s a positive point.
I bought Zeiss Conquest for 430$,the seller said to me there are more in stock,if do you want I post seller
If I test both scopes I would like a little bit Zeiss quality. I haven t mounted Zeiss, yet, only view through .

So, according to this scale, the Monarch Gold and Titanium are lesser quality than the regular Monarch? I know the Monarch X is kinda top of the line, but everything I've read it starts at the Monarch and goes up from there. I'm confused.

The list takes into consideration 6 different criteria not just quality. It's also not gospel, only a guideline list. |

The scope rating scale takes in value for the dollar spent too, I could be wrong on that but I think I remember that is one of the considerations in the ranking.

Pretty much the only diff I ever figured out was the 30mm tube and the 4x erector of the Gold.
The new Monarchs now have 4x erector, but 1" tubes.
Glass and coatings on both scopes I *believe* are the same.

Both appear the same to me.The 30mm may give you more adjustment and stronger tube.

Man, I have to say I am impressed with the knowledge shared! You guys have told me in 12 hours what I have been trying to get out of local dealers for weeks! So, bottom line here, I have narrowed my choice down to the Monarch Gold and the Conquest. Would love some feedback on which is the better choice for my dollar. Also, my buddy bought an AR with a Mueller Eradicator scope on it. I told him about this site and how impressed I was and he wondered if anyone had any opinions on that particular scope. Does he need to upgrade or will it serve him fine for varmint hunting? Thanks to everyone!

yep!! Take out #6 and it would interesting to see what the shift would be on the list. here you go: 1. Optical Quality - How bright and clear the scope is. 2. Specifications - Field of view, eye relief, weight, adjustment travel, etc. 3. Durability - How do they with stand the test of time. 4. Special Features & Options - Proprietary items (reticles, design, turrets), Zoom ratio. 5. Warranty & Customer Service - How good are they. 6. Value - Bang for your buck. I have two Zeiss Conquest (3.5-10x44 and a 4.4-14x50) and one Nikon Monarch UCC (older style) (6.5-20x44). Not sure how to do a fair comparision but it would seem to me that the exit pupils would have to be set-up for each scope to balance out the objective openings and magnification range. Either way, all of them are real clear. The Zeiss reticles are etched but they also cost a tad more.

Thanks for the kind words, model70. Glad we could help.
I'm a big Nikon fan, but I always thought the Nikon Gold was a little over priced.
I'd probably go with a Conquest given those two options.
Run a search in our archives for the Mueller.
Welcome to Optics Talk.

Thanks to everyone for the input. Yall have made a decision that I have been torn on for weeks seem easy. I hate that I found this sight too late for KY deer season, but, while a little pricey to shoot, the 7 mag will split a coyote in half. I will let you guys know how I fair.
