I think we all knew that Hornady/Ruger would eventually neck up the 375 Ruger case. Ya think?
As always, when Ruger and Hornady get together!!!

Hornady is really putting out alot of inovative new products for 2009, sure makes it fun and interesting. For 2009 I just might have to put together a ruger .416 with a Bushnell 1.25-8 6500 scope, now that sounds like fun!

Ok, maybe a Trijicon Accupoint would be better. |

Hey squeeze. Dont forget that .416 can be loaded with a 300gr Barnes TSX and get a pretty decent trajectory as well. Cartridge looks like a winner to me.
Oh yea, Im new here, nice place. Im just a run of the mill, lightweight recoil junky. I found this place finding more info on the new .416 Ruger. I was first reasing about the wildcat here http://www.rifleshootermag.com/ammunition/RS_wildcatting_200806/ I wont own a rifle without Magnum in the name , so this one really intrigues me.
I've told my gun dealer, as soon as one of the .416's come available at one of his distributors, that I want one. Now I wait.
You are saying a 3-9 might be too much for a .416 ? How so, not enough eye relief, or more zoom than it needs for it's range ?
By the way, I plan to hunt Virginia whitetails with mine just to see what happens.

Virginia whitetails with a .416? Hmmm! Well, hopefully you`ll include a hunting trip to big bear, big bison country or maybe to Africa someday????????
Yes, imo a 3x9 is way too much scope for a any 416, or even any 375 for that matter! More magnification than is needed. It`s not so much the eye relief even though that is still a concern. It is instead and more importantly, the FOV (lack of it with a 3x9) and the acquisition and aiming speed necessary for quick follow up shots. The only 3x9 that would work fine for a DGR in the speed dept is the (both eyes open capable) Trijicon Accupoint.
On any dangerous game rifle (DGR), it is not a real good idea to mount a slower scope where the non-aiming eye has to be squinted or closed, as well as offer a narrower FOV. Doing so increases the time to the target by slowing down the signals to the shooter`s brain, therby increasing the reaction time for acquiring, aiming and firing.
The 1.5-5x20 VX3 with wider FOV`s mounted on my 375 Ruger Alaskan is very fast, by offering fast both eyes open acquiring and aiming on the low end power for moving game or otherwise. Also, it is more than sufficient at 5x on the high end for precision shots on deer, elk sized game and larger plains game out to 300-350 yards.
Even with a Barnes 300 gr. TSX, the 416`s cannot shoot as flat as the 375`s do and I wouldn`t consider a 416 to be as good a 300 to 350 yard round. However! I`m NOT stating here that it cannot be done. For my preference, the 416`s are not as good in the flat shooting dept to suit me for the longer distance work.
A 375 with the right bullet, can shoot as flat as a 270 Win, is flatter shootin than the 180 gr. `06 and hits much harder than both when it gets there!!....From "gunblast.com" dated 2/6/07, that`s a Jeff Quinn quote from his rifle review of the 375 Ruger African.
For your use, (ON VIRGINIA WHITETAIL), if you don`t already have a 375, why not consider that first before a 416?.............

I very well might get a .375. I'm a .300 Win Mag junky. I have a M77 MkII stainless (polished to a mirror), wearing a Hogue Overmold stock. Very fun gun. Regularlly shoots .5"-.7" 3 shot groups. So the thoughts of another Ruger rifle lights my fire :D
What can I say, I have an Elmer Keith way of thinking. Never ben under-gunned Edited by tang419 - November/19/2008 at 15:16 |

Squeezer, your wish for new AccuPoints may come true soon. One looks like a 1-4 with 30mm tube.
http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?p=242801&posted=1#post242801 I couldn't find any specs on-line but I'm sure they'll be shown at the upcoming Shot Show.. Edited by mike650 - November/19/2008 at 16:08 |

Hornady has been making excellent ammo for a long time. I signed up for their updates a few years back and I get far more from them than the Big Three.
Steve Hornady is doing hunters a big service with their developments.

Hats off to Ruger too for creating new rifles to chamber those new innovative Hornady cartridges. Now, Marlin has recently worked with Hornady as well to create the new 338 Marlin Express in a new and powerful Marlin lever.
Any rifle maker that teams up with Hornady to create an even better innovative product, has my attention!
