Since I would rather sit here and ask silly questions then finish digging down to my foundation to see where the water is coming from that is entering my basement - I'm about 6' deep and now have to use a bucket to get the dirt out because I can't through it out anymore - I was wondering why we don't have a 29 caliber.... like a .295. Looks like there isn't a 23 caliber either. Anybody know why that is?
Help fill in what I have missed.
.338
.325 - ?
.308
.284
.277 - I think
.264
.257
.243
.224 - I think there might be others as well
.218 - ?
.204
.17 - not sure what this is

There are a ton of calibres that can be added. Naming conventions are confusing and often don't relect true calibre. .218 Bee - is really .22 calibre. Old varmint pushed out of favour when the .222 came out.
And then there are the variants/wildcats! This is a book all by itself

38-40 is really a 40 cal....correct?
I don't know why there is no 29 cal. ( 7.35mm Carcano? ).......go ahead and create one!! Everyone will buy it and the old timers ( like you-know-who ) will say we don't need it............which we probably don't ........but who cares??
Anyway..............HEY BIGDADDY!!! Edited by Ed Connelly - October/28/2008 at 10:31 |

38-40 - another sweetheart. Based on the 44-40, should have meant 38 calibre, 40 grains of black powder but it is .401

A 29 caliber sounds funny and would not resonate with shooters. Besides, why have a 29 when we already have the 7`s and the 30`s? A 29 would be too close to either and serve no additional purpose, other than more confusion.

Kind of like a .257 and a .264 or a .277 and a .284. They are all pretty close, but the .264 and .284 have big advantages ballistically over the others just under them. So maybe the .29 would as well.

anybody know how to figure out what the best grain weigth in .295 would be to get a great b.c & s.d. to make the "perfect" deer round.... kind of like the 140 grn .260?

It would need to be pretty heavy to make it really good. maybe 175 to 190 grains. Then it could be quite long and that is where you would gain the high BC and the high SD
That is why the 175 gr .284 bullet is so good. Quite a bit longer than a .308 of the same weight which provides for the high BC and the high SD. |

I've often wondered the same thing myself. If you look at the distance between the caliber measurements, there is definitely a gap.
.243" to .257" - .014"
.257" to .264" - .007"
.264" to .277" - .013"
.277" to .284" - .007"
.284" to .308" - .024"
.308" to .323" - .015"
.323" to .338" - .015"
Too big a jump and right in the middle of the most useful bore diameter for most all of North American hunting.
I think they couldn't think of a catchy name for a .296" caliber. Would be just right for a decent velocity from a 180 grain bullet which the 30-06 shoots too slow and the 300 win mag shoots too fast.
