Gents,
Im a long time listener/first time caller; I have orders to ship soon (4's the charm!) and will be taking a TR21 with me this trip over. What is the general opinion/exp regarding reticle color for operating in the Box? Im a fan of the amber but I cant help but think that amber will be a washout waiting to happen (at least during daytime operations) given the AOR Im heading to. I look forward to reading your replies. Yak

Welcome to the OT!
This being your 4th tour I imagine we'd be askin you for imput. I haven't used a TR21 and can't offer any first hand experience. But since the triangle is fiber optic for day light you should be ok. I noticed there is an option for german crosshair with a amber dot. That may fit your need well provided the dot brightness is adjustable. Unless you will be pullin alot of tower or gate duty I wonder if you'll get much sight time in a fire-fight. When we walked rounds thru the sight picture was low and fast.
We here at the OT keep you and all soldiers held up infront of God so I expect you'll be tellin us that #4 was the charm. Keep your head down and both eyes open!
P.S. If you know you'll be tower hoppin a range finder is helpful. I used mine to make range cards for all our towers. At first it was just something to do, but when the locals lost their minds it was like connecting the dots. It also cut down on collateral damage (and excess audits). God Bless!!

Thank you for all your kind words, sir. THIS NCO knows what you mean. Man, I've done the Tower Rat gig one too many! LOL That gig made me feel like I was the last man standing at the Alamo. Not my fave type of posting.
Good advice on the ranging aspect. I should've seen that one coming...getting old I guess.
I considered the #4 reticle but after playing house with one Im not sure its the way to go. I could be wrong and all but I would need some time to get used to it and time isnt gonna happen Im afraid.
Again, thank you for your reply and your Service. Stay safe. Yak

Red is going to be a lot easier to see. What is your standard issues sight if any? If your not held down to the Trijicon I like the Aimpoint Magnifier http://www.swfa.com/c-848-aimpoint-3xmag.aspx if you have an M68. That paired with a Larue magnifier pivot mount is the stuff. http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=171
Best of both worlds. Edited by Mithran - October/28/2008 at 01:12 |

I'll be taking along an M68 in a QRP mount. I thought about a magnifier but I dont have the rail space and my unit aint too hip on putting the 68 in an LT mount to make running the magnifier easier (ask me how I know! :)). |

There should be plenty of room on the reciever for both. I do not advise putting red dots over the gas tube. A plenty of sights have been killed by the heat given off the tube.
I know what you mean about COC's being anal, God forbid a Warrior customizes his sh*t that makes him a more effective fighter on the battlefield. One reason I got out. Bet you they wouldn't even allow you to run a BUIS because it's "customized." I wanted to run a collapsable stock on my M16A4 to make it easier to shoulder with body armor, but no the USMC was stuck on the A2 buttstock because maybe I would need to buttstroke someone. Screw that, if I'm that close he's getting a muzzle thump and then his skull crushed with my boot.
Sorry for the rant but damn, when I hear stupid sh*t like this I think about that old T-shirt,
"If you die first we're splitting up your gear." More likely it's your gear that got you killed and I don't want any of it.

Rant away, sir!!! RANT ON---My last time over I had installed and BZO'd a NM front sight post as I felt the standard post was just too much for stuff at 300m or so. One day I pulled my M4 for convoy and my NM was replaced by a standard post. Okay, fine. I shouldnt have done the switch in the first place. But now I didnt have Irons BZO'd and the REMF that did it knew I was leaving the wire that morning and insted of calling me out and telling me to fix it when I got a chance for range time he went ahead and jacked with my rifle. This is the same guy that almost shed tears because I had the gall to mount a Vickers Sling on my weapon. Think of Lt Dyke on Band Of Brothers and that was/is this dude! LOL---RANT OFF

Like sand in Iraq there has been another change: I will not be sporting a TR21 after all. I will receive a spanking new Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5X20 MRT (Illuminated) to accomplish optics duty on my carbine. Now, all that is needed is a LaRue SPR-E mount and all will be well. But, if availability of the LaRue is a problem I would consider an ADM "alternative"(I have no time on ADM products, though ). Stay Safe All.

Nice set up. Man, I dig the compact ACOGs more and more. I've recently been turned on to the TA47 2X20 version in the compact line. I think, or my needs, it fits the bill pretty well as far as the whole ACOG series goes. A TA47 in a LaRue or an ADM mount will cost me more then what I will pay for the MRT/Larue combo, though. YMMV

I understand the wallet issue but your life is worth something likely more than the difference I hope. There is nothing wrong with this ARMS mount. I do like GG&G stuff also but was a victim of what was available and the 2x was not but having used the 1.5 I do not feel I lost out as the field of view is about 10 ft wider and that translates to faster. Im sold on the ACOG s

Not trying to sound cheap but since you kind gents used the word "value" so will I; Price is a huge factor and/or hurdle for ALL. Its just some folks can overcome that factor and/or hurdle a bit easier then others. And I dont mind spending X-amount of $$$ as long as I know and trust that Im getting the same (or more) x-amount of value for my buck. ARMS mounts, for me, have provided that in the past (I did break one the last time I was in Saudi Arabia, though! ) As for the compact ACOGs; they are the shiz and I wish I could own every make and model of the line. However, at this time, I do not trust that they provide ME with the "value" we all have just posted about and insted of jumping that particular hurdle I will be looking elsewhere for comfort. Not that a TA47 isnt in my future. But as far as the compact line goes I do think the TA33 is the value leader in its class and I will likely end up with a 33 before a 47 unless Trijicon sweets the treat by a little price modification.I hope Ive explained my opinions fairly well (my two year old son just got up and wants to play insted of going back to sleep! Goodnite! Yak
