I am just getting started in long range rifle shooting and would like to get a .308 heavy Barrel. I would like to be able to shoot out to 800 yards+. I know that there are many variables. I intend on using the rifle for target shooting as well as deer hunting. What rifle would someone recommend and what rate of twist to accomplish accuracy at this distance?

Welcome to Optics Talk.

Which Remington model specifically are you considering? LTR?

Personally, I wouldn't recommend one.... I'd recommend two.... 1 for "long range" target shooting and another for "deer" hunting.  IMO, they can't be combined especially when you're talking about a heavy barrel.

Maybe you could explain more about the type of deer hunting you'll be doing.
take em!

Of the two, with the job description of long range shooting, I'd go remington for the following reasons;
More rigid action
Better trigger assembly
Much better stock
Better barrel ( remington does not straighten their barrels, savage does )
More readily available aftermarket accessories.  Savage is gaining ground in this regard but big Green is still the winner.

If you bought a PSS you'd  have a future basis to build on and still have a rifle light enough to pack hunt with.

For what it is worth, my cousin just bought one of the older VS models with heavy barrel before they were fluted and used it to elk hunt for the last few days with me.  He was complaining the whole time that it was to heavy and is going to buy a lighter rifle.  Of course he is a whiner and insists on carring what ever rifle he has on has slung back all the time, cause it makes his arms tired. Whatever Baby  We spent about 6 hours a day out hiking for the 3 days.

I am looking at the Rem. sps varmit with the 26" Barrel and the Savage Model 10 with the 24" Barrel. I have a lighter hunting rifle if I need to walk long distances.

Problem with both of those is the stock.  The cheapo savage stock will bend and hit the barrel, it you are using it on a bipod it will affect your accuracy greatly as it will change you POI as the stock bends and pushes on the barrel.  Same thing will happen with the SPS.  Spend a little more and get one of the guns with an HS precision stock.  They are stiff and are free floated so that will not be an issue.  Either the 1-10 of the savage or the 1-12 of the remmy will be fine for 800 plus yards.

................. If you`re going to do some target shooting and some stationary varmit hunting, that is ok for a heavier barreled rifle. By the time you put a scope and rings on and depending on the scope and the rifle you select, your looking at 9 to the 10 lb range.

For deer hunting, unless you plan to do alot hunting from a stand or blind, it is not the best idea to lug around a heavier rifle, especially if you`re doing alot of long hiking in steeper and/or mountaneous terrain should you ever do so. That extra pound or two can and does make alot of difference.

For that reason, buy the rifle that matches what you are going to do the majority of the time.

If your doing more hunting with hiking, you may want to some re-thinkin!!!

Browning BAR or a levergun for hunting and a heavy barrel of some sort for target shooting.

Savage has come a long way, but a Rem. 700 is still out in front (IMO).

I consider myself a Savage "guy"  I have several model 99 lever actions as well as 3 9317's and 2 Model 11's: 22-250 & .204.  I also have two 700, a .223 BDL and a .270 CDL.  When it comes to bolt centerfires, I only buy Savage when I can't afford Remington's!!!!  They will both git-r-done, but the Rem just feels better in the hand and looks better to the eyes.
take em!
