Hi all

I have an old Weaver 3-9 x 40 scope with adjustable objective  on my hunting rifle at the moment and after hunting in low light conditions last weekend, I've come to the conclusion that I need a better scope.

However, I have noticed that most of the 3-9 power scopes on the market today don't have an adjustable objective and are parallax free at 100 yards.

So when looking through these scopes other than at 100 yards, do they get blurry at other ranges eg 200 yards, 300 yards etc?

Is not having an adjustable objective a liability?

The scopes I'm thinking about buying are the Zeiss 3-9 x 40 Conquest and the Sightron SII
big sky 3-9 x 36 with adjustable objective.

Any help much apprciated Big%20SmileHowdy

Regards, Jaeg

For hunting purposes an adjustable objective can actually be a hinderance in that your target my appear at any distance. Mostly there is not enough time to re-focus. On low power scopes (say 10x) parralax is also not such an issue. If you are punching paper and chasing 3 bullets in the same hole, then AO can help you in your quest for perfection. For the rest a solid shooting set-up is more important.

Yes, the target do become blurry at 200 yds and so on using scopes with AO focussed. But more importantly you have parralax error which is not focussed out, so having a AO and then not using it because the target only appeared briefly is pointless.

Scopes without AO have a sharp image at all distances (except very close off course).

A set AO for hunting scopes and QA scopes is a preferencial thing. They are clear and accurate so lay those concerns to rest.

I also agree that A/O in not needed on a hunting scope, also I believe you will find the conquest and sightron SII scopes to have much better glass than what you are currently using.

An AO or parallax adjustment control is not needed on hunting scopes up to x10, some may even go as far as to say 12x.

None of my regular hunting scopes have A.O. (on purpose).

Hi all  Howdy

Thanks for all the replies, I've had the old weaver since 1983,
it was a fairly good scope for the time.

Now that you've all put my mind at rest on scopes without an adjustable
objective, I think I'll buy the Zeiss Conquest. I'm going up to Sydney
for the weekend and plan to visit a few gun shops and look through
some scopes, hopefully they will have some conquests in stock. Yippee

Thanks for the help

Regards, Jaeg
