Just found this forum! Looks great so far.
I bought a Winchester model 70 classic about 12 years ago and its been in the gun safe since. Its the SS/ composite stock, 24"barrel, 270 win. (post-92 controlled round push feed)
I'm ready to put a scope on. Thinking of going with the Nikon Buckmaster 3x9 40.
Had first decided on the leupold 2pc. double dove tail rings and bases but am now leaning toward the Talley 0ne-piece alloy mounts (930702)
Any advice on this set-up would be helpful.
Thanks.....

For the money, the Buckmaster is a pretty good scope. However, for a few more bucks, you`d be better served by the 3x9 Elite 4200 with Rainguard, which for what you get, is perhaps the best scope for the dollar on the market.
I personally, am not a big fan of one piece bases. I don`t like anything near, around or on either side of the receiver and imo, two piece base mounts with NO ugly offsetting rings do look the best.
Since I own Rugers, I didn`t need to worry about any extra bases and rings. I`m sure the guys here will suggest with some good bases and rings for you.
The 3x9 4200 gives you a maximum of 6" of mounting tube length, which is enough for the longer action 270 Win., using a two piece system, WITHOUT off-setting rings.

4200 is a great scope +1 ..Dual dovetail mounts would work well ( need alignment bars to assure proper placement) . The one piece Talley mounts would also work fine, and negate the need for alignment bars( and would handle a 270's recoil with no worries ) . Make sure that whatever scope you choose, will fit the low mounts you are looking at (allot of 40mm bells will ).

I went with the Talley two-piece on my Howa and like them a lot. For about what you're paying for a Buckmark you can pick up a Nikon team Primos ($200).

Bottom line is you can't go wrong w/talley rings and bases. I agree the 4200 would be a better choice, for the price it's hard to beat. What's the maximum you are willing to spend and maybe we can help you more?

I have a buckmaster 3-9X40 and its an ok scope. I also have a 4200 and I like it better. Paid about the same for both, but I know the buckmasters have come down in price recently. Not sure if you are aware of this forums sponsor: SWFA, they are a great partner and we highly recommend purchasing from them. Here are a couple of links to there stuff.
here is the Nikon Primos.... it is a step up from the buckmaster, although it only comes with the BDC reticle. A great buy!
Here is another nice scope and most would agree is a step up from the buckmaster
I have had really good luck with the Warne rings with Weaver style mounts. They also sell a torgue wrench thats helps get the right amount of tightness on all the srcews! I use them with regular Weaver mounts (a little cheaper).

Thanks for the advice! Now ya got me scratchen my head. Those scopes sound like good one's. Will certainly be buying mounts at the SWFA site. Thats how I found this forum. Did a search on talley mounts and it led me here. I can get the Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 for $180 delivered. Thats realy more then I need to spend. I don't want junk but don't need top end either. Now maybe I need to just put back a little more for either the Bush-4200 or Nikon-8435. Just thought I had narrowed my search down to a good reliable scope for my needs with the Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 BDC.
Thanks for the advice..

On your budget the Team Primos is clearly, pun intended, the winner.
I have Leo dual dovetails and they are solid and good looking mounts. I have steel Talley's and the quality is top drawer. I have no doubt the light weight aluminum mounts are of the same quality. They look good, too. |

first off sell the .270 and secondly take the team primos or the 4200 elite, i own both and they are both way better than the buckmaster (which i also have one of) you will thank us for it especially if you compared the three of them together you would see a pretty nice change by spending the few extra bucks.

+1 on the primos. Not so much on the selling the .270. Pyro is just biased against them.
