You could try the Eastman's hunting rags.

The writing pretty much sucks but, at least it's real people doing real hunts as opposed to paid writers being invited onto private ranches so they can "field test" gear given them by various manufacturers/advertisers and where there is little or no actual hunting happening.
What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

GUNS magazine has improved and I actually like reading it now. I also like Stephen Ambrose's books, and how come I didn't see the American Rifleman on your list. You may want to consider music and books on tape (or whatever) because the first few days after surgery your not going to feel like reading or watching anything til you get used to the meds.
GOOD LUCK!
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail, Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter, and A Sentimental Safari all by Theodore Roosevelt, Charles Edward Chapel's Guns of the Old West by Dr. Jim Casada, The Ultimate Guide to Bowhunting by H. Lea Lawrence, Wilderness Living by Gregory J. Davenport, The Manual for Successful Hunters by Tony Russ, and for a change, The Pleasure of Finding Things Out, Six Easy Pieces and Six Not-So-Easy Pieces by Richard P. Feynman and God's Equation by Amir D. Aczel.
That should keep you busy...
