This topic came up today among the moderators, having to do with Rule #1 which was;

1.  Keep it clean.  If you have to ask your self whether or not it's clean.........don't post it.  This includes images too, no blood, guts, nudity, etc.

I did not make the rule very clear and left it open to interpretation.  I made it more clear today and the current Rule #1 is;

1.  Keep it clean.  If you have to ask your self whether or not it's clean.........don't post it.  This includes images too, no blood, guts, nudity, etc.  Only respectful "Hero Shots" of harvested game can be posted.  Pictures of bloody game, game hanging or game in the bed of pick-up truck are not respectable.

And here is my reason.  Hunters are a dying breed and we don't need to help contribute to the decline.  There are three camps in regards to hunting.  There are hunters, anti-hunters and undecided.  The largest group by far is the undecided.  Most of the undecided have not had the opportunity to hunt or don't know much about it.  It is because cities are getting larger, families don't stay together and single moms are not taking their kids hunting.  We as hunters have two major responsibilities and both have to do with the title of this thread, RESPECT.  We must respect the game that we are hunting and we must respect the non hunting undecided crowd.  By strapping a gutted deer to the roof of your car and parading it through town you are only forcing the undecided crowd to move to the anti-hunting crowd.  Undecided young kids and females don't find this even remotely appealing.  It is very disrespectful to the animal as well.  My position on this may not be a popular one but I feel very strongly about it.  There is a reason why you don't see blood and guts on hunting T.V. shows and hunting magazines.  Magazines (at least the major responsible ones) do not publish deer in the bed of pick-up trucks because it is disrespectful.

Hunts are memorable experiences of being out doors, meeting new people, seeing things you've never seen before and mostly the excitement of hunting.  Photos capture these feelings and can be revisited at any time in life.  When I look at a mount on the wall it does not invoke the same feelings and memories as does the photographs from the hunt.  I cherish my photos more than I do my mounts.  In fact I don't have most of my stuff mounted, I just boil out the skulls and pile them in the attic.  I spend a very long time after a successful hunt cleaning the animal off, properly positioning him in the light, making sure there is a nice background and then I take 10x more pictures than I think I need because there are always one or two that really turn out good.  It is really simple to get the blood off the animal or to cover it up by using bottled water from your pack or by simply throwing dirt on the entrance and on the nose and mouth.

So my point is if a hunt is such an important thing why would you not want to capture it respectfully in the field where the animal was harvested?  I understand that many times a picture is an afterthought because so much thought went into making the hunt happen and it shouldn't be that way.  With a little planning ahead and thinking you will be able to capture something very special that will last forever.

Keep in mind that our site is visited by much more than just hunters.  We have a greater responsibility as hunters to not be portrayed like the character in the Sony's Open Season animated motion picture.  You can make a difference by simply respecting the game and respecting the very impressionable undecided crowd.

We could learn alot from the Europeans and African PH's in the department of respect and tradition.  Here is a little story that depicts some of the tradition in Europe.

Thanks for the reminder, Chris.  This has made me rethink my own actions.  Growing up on a farm and having been a hunter all my life, I take for granted the realities of what must take place to convert an animal to food.  In all honesty, I never snapped pics of most of the game animals I've taken and I regret that I am left with only pleasant memories of those hunts.  Of those that I have, I've always posed the pics more with an eye toward composition rather than whether or not it showed respect for the animal.  Don't get me wrong, I always respected the animal, I just took for granted that everyone I showed the picture to did as well, and that they knew without me having to say so that I did.  But, everyone I associate with are either hunters or view hunting in a positive light already, so I seldom stop to think about how the "antis" view me, because I don't associate with any.

This is my bad Chris, I posted a pic of my daughters deer in a truck, hope this discussion didn't come up because of me. I meant no disrespect to your forum or you, and will take the picture off.

+1 with what RifleDude said,except I can't rethink my actions. The urge to hunt came on me at an early age with no malice intended and I was influenced by no one. Therefore I will apologize to no one. I just can't comprehend what the modern day version of the hunter is suppose to represent or why he has to represent anything for that matter. For me it was never an agenda to be promoted through image. It's just done as natural as a kid saying I'm going out to play. Hard to explain why you hunt when you never thought why you didn't!  But I guess if people still get the urge to hunt and an image has to be portrayed by the hunter to protect hunting,if it works the great outdoors and the wildlife in it will appreciate it. When/if hunting and fishing are no longer,who will care as much we did to "properly" manage and protect it.

Thank you Chris for making the guideline more clear. This is a very good observation on your part. Regardless of our own personal thoughts on the subject, you are correct in that we share a responsibility to the future of our interest and doing all that we can to preserve it for future generations.
Trig, Your humble acceptance is admirable, and I thank you. I hid the thread in order to keep your post count the same, and out of respect for you in this regard I didn't want to just delete it.

Cyborg, I took the picture down immediately after reading this thread. Thanks for trying to cover me. The post count really means nothing to me, just a number. Your respect is far more valued.

He beat me to it...

My comment here is that all "targets" deserve a certain amount of respect. However, respect for the "game" in this instance is not the pertinent question. The impact to "our" community by usage of a picture by the socialist/communist elitists is what we must guard against. What may be benign to "us" may be presented in a highly offensive manner by s/ce and their cohorts in the "media". We must all, therefore, guard against, with great fervor, any depiction which may be exploited by our ENEMIES. And enemies they are. They have only ill will against us, only malice in store for us. They seek to dominate us and take away most that brings us happiness. The world has become a weary and sad place for me, for joy that was once open must now be concealed, lest the "overseers" despise us and falsely witness against us to the "masses". You must understand that the MAJORITY of people, either through laziness or through ignorance, no longer FREELY support our causes. WE have allowed this to happen by inaction and can only win the day by rising up against the tide that now swells against us. Many great words are spoken, but only by action can we prevail.

I ran across this on the Boone and Crockett website while researching pics of a trophy elk I received in an email.  It's pertinent to this topic and worth reading.
