    Posted: September/16/2008 at 17:57
I want a good quality scope to mount on a heavy-barrel rimfire bolt gun. The purpose is to serve as an "understudy" to my long range centerfire rifle; I'll be practicing wind reading, windage adjustments, and "come ups" at reduced rimfire targets between 50-200 yards. This is a scope I'll be spending a lot of time behind, so I want it to be "just so."

The scope must have: top notch optics; AO or similar parallax correction; absolutely reliable, repeatable adjustments that will pass a square test and not self-destruct in 9 months.

Things that would be nice but not required: rangefinding or mil-dot reticle, preferably in the first focal plane; quick eyepiece focusing.

I'm not too concerned with a large objective; I'll sacrifice some light gathering to get it closer to the bore axis. Magnification range can be modest - since I'm simulating the appearance of targets at long range, 10x or thereabouts at the top end is more than sufficient. I'd also consider a fixed optic in the 5x or 6x range, if it met the rest of the criteria.

If in doubt...optical quality is #1 and repeatable adjustments are #2. I'd like to keep it under $750, if possible.

Ideas?

Nice looking...no AO, unfortunately - though how important is that on a 6x scope at 50 yards?

A friend suggested the Burris 6x competition scope:

http://www.swfa.com/pc-4531-203-burris-6x32-fullfield-ii-rifle-scope.aspx

I'm not at all familiar with them; anyone have experience with this one?

If you are shooting between 50 and 200 yards why do you NEED the AO?

I am in the same boat as you and have been researching this topic also. But I also need to to go down to 25yds(indoor range is only 25yds). I have considered the Leupold VXlll 6.5-20x40EFR (Too much money for the value.), Bushnell elite 4200 4-16x40 and the Sightron Sll Bigsky 3-12x42. I have played with all except the Leupold and I am leaning towards the Sightron. To me the Sightron has very nice glass and adjustments. Plus more E/W adjustment than the Bushnell.

Do a search on each of these three scopes to see what the optics masters have to say on them.  If it was not for the recomendations of the optics masters I never would have EVEN looked at the Sightron or the Bushnell.

For some reason people think they must have this feature.  Most makers scopes are set at the factory for 100 to 150 yards.  This means for your stated ranges you are more accurately set than you could do on your own.  Your percentage of error is so small over the range that it should not matter. You are well with in the margin of error.  Any breeze is going to be a larger factor.

That depends on one's eyesight. I set my parallax correction by focusing the far image; very small amounts of correction are easily visible. On a non-adjustable scope, I can see the far image get progressively less sharp the further it gets from the set range.

What is the exact amount of parallax error at 50 yards on a scope set for 150 yards?

Depends on the scope, how high from center of bore etc., But, the parallax can be the difference between a hit or a miss depending on the size of the target and the distance.  Many fixed AO scopes are preset for 150 yards.  Short work needs a scope that the parallax is adjusted or can be adjusted to the much shorter ranges you've mentioned.  You should check out "Airgun Field Target" on Brad Troyer's website Airguns.net. It will give you a good feel for what works up close.  There a few other sites dedicated to this shooting game that would be helpful for you too.  Those boys are the masters on short range targets simulating long range conditions.
They use very high power scopes to do their range finding by adjusting the parallax adjustments (AO or side wheel) until the focus is spot on and reading their specific yardage marks they've calibrated on the AO or Sidewheel. I know one of their facorite scopes is the big 8 X 32 bushnell 4200 for this work.  It's surprizing how accurate their rangefinding is using this method.  They can distinguish darn near exact yardages, and when shooting1/4 inch to 3/4 inch targets at unmarked ranges from 15 yds to 65 yds, there's not a lot of room for error.
On most non AO airgun and rimfire scopes, the parallax is preset at much shorter distances than large bore rifle scopes....there is a reason why.

Check out Brad's site...it's very educational

Honestly I'm not sure how practical the whole idea is. Sighting in at 50yds gives you in excess of 2' of drop at 200yds and even a slight breeze will throw that little pill way off. But if it's something you really want to try then I'd use a Weaver V16 or V24.

Sholling, not that it matters since the OP's post os over a year old, but he never said it was a .22LR.  Just that it was a rimfire.

I think speed is increasing because the ballistic coefficient that was used well exceeds unity.

Lots of options for your application, indeed. Look at Leupold, they can build you whatever you want, change reticles and parallax settings.  Also, have you looked at Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32 with a ballistic reticle?

Depending on which magnification you want, I would recommend the various models of Leupold's EFR scopes also.  I really like mine.  Good quality glass and excellent reliable adjustments.  Good luck!
