I'm looking for some scope advice...I'm relatively new to hunting.  Most of my experience has been with open sites on the M16.  I've got a Rem. 700 7MM ultra mag that I want to put a good scope on.  I want a scope that I can elk hunt long range 400yds with and whitetail hunt under 100yards.  I'm looking at the Nikon monarch 4x16x50 with the BDC reticle.  Any comments or suggestions?

I too would recommend the 2.5-10 range for the application. The 4-16 will suffice though I think it's just a bit much. Basically preference though.

I would go with a Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x. That would have everything you wanted.  It would give you the magnification to really stretch the legs of that rounds and also give you the low power for the close up stuff.  Downside is the size and weight.  But on that rifle it will probably be nice to help tame the recoil a bit.

All the above sound good, how about a Zeiss Conquest with the Rapid z 600 reticle...as another option...just a thought.

I like this guy already. Trouble in convincing people to buy a conquest is getting them to spend the money. I nearly choked myself to death to keep my wife from getting to me when I did. But once I had it I never looked back.

400 yds for an Elk, YES!  so would 9x.  If you like the BDC, it would be hard beat this scope for "best value"

If I was looking in the budget range that you are, my first choice if you like ballistic reticles would be this.

I do have to agree with tip69 though. For the money the Nikon Team Primos is a very good buy. I have one of these too, and while not as impressed with it as I am the Zeiss, it was a lot less money too. As far as 9x being enough, I shoot a 10" steel swinging target at 600 yds. with my Zeiss at 10x.

I have used mine for deer for 2 seasons now, and can always see the whole reticle long before legal shooting light. Trouble is here that is only 1/2 hour before sunrise and 1/2 hour after sunset. The scope appears to be bright enough that the reticle is thick enough to see.

10-4 tip, Rapid-Z seems to do the trick, so long as you are not hunting at night. I can see all the markings for hold over way before the game warden will allow me to shoot. The small lines on the outsides used for ranging may be a different story. I never paid much attention to them, as I just pull out the Geovids. Much faster, and my math isn't that good.Big%20Smile
