I'm thinking about buying a Swarovski AV 3-10x42 with a 4A reticle for my Remington CDL SF in 300 WSM. I already have a Swaro PH 2.5-10x42 with a 7A reticle on my Kimber Montana in 30 06 and love it. How does the AV compare to the PH except of course the tube size? Will I be giving up anything except weight by going to an AV instead of a PH? Thanks, Sam

Back to the question, so what is the big difference between an AV, PH or Z6 other than weight, eye relief and tube size? In other words, what would I be giving up by going with an AV? Sam |

I am going to compare the Sawrovski American 3-10x42 and the Swarovski PH 3-12x50. The American is 4 oz. lighter, 4 in. shorter, has about .4 in more eye relief, and about a foot more of FOV @ 100 yds. The Professional Hunter has a better

Thanks Chris, I have been toying with the idea of waiting a bit longer to save up for a Z6. I kind of like the 1.7-10x42.

Besides the aforementioned weight, tube size, and ER, the AV uses traditional leaf springs to support the erector assy; the PH and Z6 uses coil springs, which reportedly makes them more rugged. The AV also has a 2nd focal plane reticle and most (but not all) of the PH's have 1st focal plane reticles. The AV is also not available in an illuminated reticle version; the PH's are (PV-I, PV-2).
I sent an email to Swaro once asking about the differences in their scope lines and they told me that there is no difference whatsoever in the glass and coatings used between the AV and PH (also called "PV"). Also, contrary to popular belief, they also told me that the AV is not made in America, but entirely in the same facility in Absam, Austria as the rest of their scopes. The AV stands for "American Variable" referring only to the 1" tube dia and 2nd focal plane reticle, which caters to American tastes, not where it is manufactured. Both of my AV scopes say "made in Austria" on the eyepieces.
The Z6 offers more zoom range and FOV on the low end compared to other scopes with the same upper end magnification. I also asked Swaro if the Z6 had superior optics to their other scopes, and they told me it had the same glass and coatings as the rest of their scopes, except that it has an additional lens in the erector assy. Other than the additional zoom and FOV and the 2nd FP reticle, they said it was optically the same as the PH at the same magnifications.
I don't own a Z6, but I do own 2 AV's and 1 PH, and I can tell you they are all superb scopes. Edited by RifleDude - September/15/2008 at 10:44 |

Yes this is true. The only scope they have that has different glass is the Z6 2.5-15, it has HD glass.
